I find myself inescapably drawn to the words 'SCSI termination'.

Is the internal HD terminated? Is the external HD terminated? If they're both properly terminated, then I'd go for the 'bad internal loom' diagnosis, which is a bit messy to correct, but far from impossible. Just remove the main logic board connector, and then that part of the loom that goes to the HD, being very careful as you remove each wire to check that doing so doesn't pull out the metal contact on which the wire is impaled - using a small screw driver to hold the contact down in the plastic connector. Then replace with a 50-way IDC cable, renewing the HD end as well, and Robert should be your parent's sibling.

At least you can take some comfort in the fact that the fault is l/b independent - that narrows things down a bit.
