Further research: www.nichia.com is worth a visit.
They list three suitable SMT LEDs, all of which cost $4.75 each:
NECB426B - 3x3x1.8mm, 0.058 cd output brightness, 10-15mA
NSCB100 - 3x2x1.5mm, 0.104 cd output, 20-25mA
NSSB440 - 3.8x2x3.2mm, 0.52 cd output, 20-30mA

All of these operate at 3.6V (max 5V) and emit light at 465 nanometers, but the higher output ones are more directional than the lower output ones. I wouldn't imagine this is a problem, as the LED is a bit behind the casing anyway.

The choice will depend on the space available (I haven't checked this yet) and the brightness required. If the voltage supply to the existing LED is 5V or more, an additional resistor (say 10-100R) will be needed to limit the current through the blue LED. I hope to check existing voltages and currents shortly.

Andy
