Is it possible that the hard disk was already formatted for a MAc Power PC? If so it could have been used on systems greater or equal to 8.1 and in a HFS+ format which OS X requires but it can be used on any systems >= to 8.1. When you format a PPC you have the choice to choose HFS or HFS+ but the default is HFS up to and excluding OSX When you have a system that has booted up in HFS+ and you attach an external HD which has HFS format (virtually all older MACS)then the HFS+ system cannot read the drive. All that you'll see is a readme file with the message (you're propably wondering why....)
I have never tried to read a HFS+ external HD on my CC but I know that that external will be unreadable.
