RAM Doubler is a much better alternative to Apple's VM in pre-Mac OS 8.5 systems, and here's why:

1) It doesn't set aside a large chunk of your hard disk. It still *uses* the hard drive, but it just doesn't create an enormous file on there.
2) It's faster.
3) It allows you to set file-mapping only, which effectively doesn't use the hard drive at all, but reduces the RAM requirements of many apps and makes the OS run more efficiently.

That said, most of the benefits of both programs only apply to PowerPC-based Macs. I don't bother using RAM Doubler on my 68K systems because System 7.1 hardly uses any RAM at all, and most of the System 7-era applications don't need much either. With at least 32MB RAM in most of them, I find that out of memory errors are virtually nonexistent.
