Well I've always had a problem with the AOL 3.0 installer because when it goes to call the 800 number it never seems to be able to connect. Being pretty ignorant of what might be ailing the installer software, I always just figured maybe AOL had discontinued the 800 number the installer was trying to use, so it can't connect. If I'm right that makes the installer pretty useless, eh?

What I discovered some time ago is that if you already have AOL 3.0 installed on one hard drive, you can copy it onto another hard drive (the entire AOL folder plus the AOL preferences folder out of the system folder). That way your new copy of AOL 3.0 bypasses the 800 number and starts right away calling a local access number, plus it remembers your favorites and old email (that's what's in the preferences folder). I've been doing this for years - literally. Once AOL 3.0 is on the new HD, the AOL 4.0 installer works just fine.

Of course, for anyone who doesn't already have a working copy of 3.0, this is no help at all. :-(
