Apple couldn't possibly have known if 128 MB DIMMs would work when they produced the 6500, because they didn't exist yet, much the same as Apple couldn't possibly have known whether or not 16 MB SIMMs would work in an SE/30.

Apple, for whatever reason, refuse to test (or at least, officially report such testing) new RAM with old Macs; I can cite about 20 examples from the AppleSpec database or the Apple Memory Guide that are very clearly *not* the maximum amount of RAM that can be used.

MacGurus, whether they make their own RAM or not (and I don't think that they do), *have* gone to the trouble of testing newer RAM with old Macs, so they (at least officially) know if it will work or not.

As far as making a DIMM Extender type of product? I doubt there's sufficient market to justify the manufacturing costs, let alone the R&D. Most Macs that used DIMMs had four slots, which is a half-gig max at today's capacities. The few that only used two slots simply aren't enough of a target market to justify production. It's not that I don't think it could be done; it's that I think the various RAM manufacturers don't see the point.
