Your Color Classic only has 256KB VRAM on board. At 512x384, you have up to 256 colors. At 640x480, you are limited to 16 colors until you upgrade your vram. You can add a 256KB VRAM SIMM which will give you 256 colors at 640x480. Had you added the second VRAM before the screen mod, you would have 16 bit or 65536 color display on the 512x384 screen. If you have an old mac laying around using 16 bit VRAM, you can pull them. Look for Centris, Quadra and even first generation ppc.
