I would erect sometimes, sometimes not. There’s no rhyme or reason to it, especially at that age.

If you use the standing position I suggested, I can speak from experience that any witnesses present will get quite an eyeful with the boy standing, slightly bent, hands on the table, it was a particularly exposed position and my rule was if my hands came off the table my mom would hit them with the spoon, requiring me to turn around and face her. If you believe exposure is part of the punishment, as my mom did, you’ll need to remove his shirt as well as boys shirts often hang low enough to provide some “cover.”
