You are not wrong. The way your parents made you do it seems pretty pointless. Progress charts have their place during active treatment phases, to demonstrate that the treatment is actually effective. But doing it for years on end doesn't serve any purpose. The way we do progress charts at work, is to give our patients gold stars. They get two when they went along with the treatment protocol and they had a successful outcome that day, one gold star when they followed the treatment protocol but weren't successful and they have to give back one gold start if they failed to follow the treatment. At the end of the week they can exchange their stars for some treat. But that rarely goes on longer then 2,3 month, certainly not for years. They also work better with younger children then with teenagers. We use them in a variety of contexts, not just for bed wetting, but if we do use them for treating bed wetting then always together with a bed wetting alarm.

We leave it up to the kids, where they want to keep the chart. Most are quite proud of them and chose to display them in their rooms, because the way the system is set up everyone can collect some gold stars to show off. There isn't a need for a lot of secrecy either as all the other children on our station are in a comparable situation and everyone has to share a bedroom with 3 or 4 other kids. Not a lot of room for secrets or privacy.
