When one of my little ones (boy 10, girl 8) break a rule, I start by taking off everything they are wearing.
Baby wipe them, even if not messy.
Massage some baby oil on their butt, while lecturing and patting a bit. Usually have them OTK for that part.
While I put them in the diaper position and use a risotto spoon, which is wooden and has a hole in it, for the main event.

I don't start counting spanks until I hear a change in cry, and then may add 10 or so more. Or more if it is major misbehavior.
