Subject: Questions to past posters on the rotation

I don't post often, and while I like O'toole, I think he has a lot of room to improve as a bench coach. Nonetheless I would like to ask everyone that beat up O'Toole about the rotation:

1) Do you still think Garcia should be shown the pine. He led the team in scoring the last 2 games.
2) Do you still want to sit Delficco? He was 5-9 today and made some key rebounds and shots.
3) Do you still think Sogdazi should sit after he hit those two consequtives three to give Fairfield back the lead?
4) Do you really think O'toole is making a mistake not playing the Freshman who were 2-11 this game and are 5-30 the last two games over the seniors who went 13-22 this game and are 22-30 the past 2 games?

I don't agree with every move O'toole makes. I was booing when he subbed the b unit for the a team that had started the game on a 10-2 run. But to say that Delficco, Sogdazi, and Garcia should be on the bench and Maxwell, Bell and Todd should play 35 minutes a game, well, the statistics don't support that arguement. Sure Bell, Todd and Maxwell are great players with a lot of potential. Sure they had a couple of great games. But they are freshman that need to be groomed and brought along. And it is in overstatement to be demanding 30+ minutes a game for freshman that haven't yet shown consistancy.

IMO, blending the experienced players with the Frosh is the way to go. Yes the Frosh seem to be more talented, but the "Mettle" of some of the more experienced players is very evident in the cheistry of this team. The other think about Freshman is that they are inconsistent, inconsistent, and inconsistent...... almost all of them are.

However.

There are some rare exceptions, and I think Terrance Todd is one of them. You kind of don't apprecciate a person until he is gone, and that was the case yesterday when Todd was out. Todd hurt his ankle in the 1st minute of the 2nd half, and his quickness was inhibited to the point that they had to go with Goode down the stretch. The half court offense was not there, and my confidence was not there. This was the first game of the year that we really had trouble (mostly turnovers) at the end of the game...... and I think the reasons were obvious.

Todd is mature and talented enough to lead this team and play significant minutes..... he makes everyone else better.

I now realize that all my bitching and complaining has been misdirected, wasted energy .
As in life, players, coaches, and teams have ups and downs--and its part of the game.
The stags were showing good stuff yesterday, are growing as a team, and are to be commended for work to date, this season.
They are fun to watch and I for one will just enjoy the balance of the year. Destination is important, so is the journey.

I have to agree with you about Todd. I like all three freshman a lot, but Todd is probably the best 1 or 2 guard we have and the offense is much better with him at the point. If you watch teams defend, when Goode is at the point, no one even covers him anymore. He's got to take an occasional shot to keep the defense honest. Also, Goode does not create off the dribble or open up the passing lanes the way that Todd does. I hope this ankle injury is a short term thing.

Hey, I admit I had my doubts about Thomson, Delfico and Garcia. Maybe they got jolted into finally performing by all the flattery directed at the freshmen.

I feel that the point of most of the critics is that game performance and hustle should earn you the minutes. In past games, it was clearly the freshmen who delivered. Now it's the upper classmen. Let's see if it reverses again. A little rivalry among players is good for the team as long as it doesn't result in selfish play.

I agree. And I think there are two good things to say about what O'toole is doing. First, everyone on this team is getting along and pulling for each other, something I haven't seen on a Fairfield team since Bowman and Francis graduated. Secondly, the players can play with a little bit of confidence, knowing that if they have a bad game, they won't get buried on the bench (even if they do get their minutes reduced).

The other major change that seems to have gone without comment is that Gai, Todd and Maxwell started this game. Did O'toole recognize these guys are the best players and make a permanent change. Or did he bench Delfico and thompson in order to send them a message. Either way, he got the desired results.

At the reception after the game, Coach Hobbie indicated the staff felt yesterday's starting line-up was their best offensive lineup. It was also pointed out that Nick gets fatigued and his game suffers. Thus, his coming off the bench just allowed a fresh player to spell a starter. Also Bridgeport, don't beat yourself up. That agonizing is part of being a fan. Agree there is no excuse to boo "your team". I would never boo ANY player, or my coach. Refs are fair game.

Consistency, Consistency, Constistency, that's the name of the game. The upperclassmen being talked about, namely, Garcia, Thompson, and Delfico have shown no consistency during their careers. I admit that they played well against Yale but don't bet the house that they will in the next game. I agree with the new starting lineup of Gai, Todd, Kudjo, Maxwell, and Garcia. We were told at the post game reception that M. Bell has been ill for the last week and Maxwell is now being asked to play the small forward position which is a change from the 4 which he was playing before. Todd over Tyquan is so one sided it should not be debated. Remember, Oscar's good offensive game is offset some by his turnovers and poor defense. Delfico still has a big problem in defending people. I like the idea of the upperclassmen coming off the bench because I think they are more suited to that situation. When M. Bell returns to form, I would seriously consider more minutes for him at Kudjo's expense. Kudjo's shooting is still not good and his decision making (turnovers, fouls) is also weak. A rotation of 9 players is more than adequate. The key is how they are used during the course of each game eg. the hot player should not be taken out even though his 4 minutes are up.
