Subject: ROBBED!!!

I thought that after a week like Deng Gai had, he would get MAAC POW. The powers that be, however, gave it to Luis Flores of Manhattan....again...

No respect...

Whoever picks these awards clearly has a "points only" bias. FF is still working on gaining respect, in a lot of ways. If the team keeps winning, it will come. DG is the best player in the league, and should be handsomely paid when his days at FF are done.

How can you say DG was robbed?

Against Niagara, Flores went for 38 pts, 9 rebs, and 5 assists. Also torched Siena for 26 and 8 rebounds - not bad for a 6'2 guard.

Gai had a monster game against Rider, but did not put up POW-type numbers in the Loyola game.

I'll also disagree with your statement that Gai is the best player in the MAAC. (I'd rank Flores and Karangwa as better.) No doubt, he does have the best body in the league and probably is the best NBA prospect the MAAC currently has.

Looking forward to the game on the 23rd. See ya in Bridgeport.

[> [> [> Does Defense Count?????? -- JoeStag, 08:42:04 01/14/03 Tue

While I probably agree that Flores deserved to get Player of Week based on 2 great offensive games, but the question is "Does Defense Count???????".

I did not see the games that Flores played so I can't comment on his "D", but Deng Gai's presence and a few early blocks had an affect on the entire opposition in the Yale, Rider and Loyola game. Amazingly, Gai can do this, and he is still learning how to play "good" Defense.

Defense is hard to quantify, and it really can only be observed..... not something that the weekly Awards Judges can see. Over the course of the Season, the Coaches will see all players twice, and hopefully put the right emphasis on Defense when voting for the POY awards. I think they will, as Deng Gai was the Defensive POY last year.

Flores and Karangwa will be candidates for POY, but if Fairfield can stay near the Top of the MAAC, Gai should get equal consideration.
