Subject: What about Robbie?

Let's say Gai leaves...

I really liked Robbie Thomson his freshman year. I think he can definitely fill our need for a post player. Also in the guard-oriented MAAC (and all of college for that matter) we can focus on Bell, Todd, Kudjo, the incoming frosh, et al for scoring. It just always seemed that Gai was a charge/travel waiting to happen when he got the ball 20 ft from the hoop. Granted I have only seen about 7-8 games this year. He definitely has the raw talent but it seemed that the set offense lacked flow with him in there. While he does have explosive jams, he seems to think for that split second when he gets the ball. I am sure that will change the more hoops he plays.

Robbie can be everything Oscar was offensively this year and his defense is underrated. He puts up some pretty big shot blocking numbers and can do that while still getting rebounds (unlike Gai). I think he really showed something his frosh year, and lost minutes because of the talent brought in, not because he played badly. I also think he would play smarter (i.e. less fouls) knowing that he'll play 25-35 minutes a game. He isn't as intimidating or disrupting as Gai, but blocking a ball out of bounds isn't too beneficial either.

Our set offense looks totally out of whack, but that may be due to the fact that Gai was perimeter big man. If we get Thomson down low, we can have a more "normal" offensive set. We can dream that this may cure TOT's pathetic offense against a zone.

I hope Gai stays, but we could be fine without him.

Not claiming to be a basketball genious, but what are your thoughts?

I agree about Robbie. I hope Gai decides to stay, but more importantly, I hope he stays focused to get his degree. If Gai ultimately decides the best thing for him is to transfer, then we should thank him for the contributions and wish him the best of luck. Robbie proved that he can bang with the big boys, and I believe he would work like a maniac in the offseason to better himself. I don't think he will ever be a dominating presence on the court, but he is a solid big man, and if we can get some outside shooting, the inside would open up and give him the opportunity to shine.

Thomson played a nice game in the finals. He showed flashes on offense and we already knew he can play defense. The MAAC doesn't require enormous numbers out of its big men. 10 points and 8 boards and you've got a good center. No reason to believe RT couldn't produce that.

I agree on Gai. Whatever happens, I wish him the best. If it was two years then so be it.

I just hope that he values the educational opportunity he is receiving. He, of all people, should know that there are more important things in life than basketball. His country needs well-educated, ethical, moral leaders. I would be prouder of him if he were ultimately to become a leader in his country than if he were to get to the NBA.

I hope your right about Thompson but I don't see him being an answer offensively for us. I hope that I am wrong about my opinion, as he works his butt off every night. I think he can be very strong defensively, especially from a rebounding perspective, but he appears very still on the offensive end. I think we need a 6'6' to 6'8' player that is strong in the paint - much like Bowman or Henderson.
