Subject: Deng Gai

I read with interest the comments regarding Coach of the Year, First Team All MAAC, All Rookie, etc and was in agreement with most of the predictions until I went and looked at the Final MAAC individual statistics.

Deng Gai-1. 17th in Scoring- 12.6 points per game;
2. 12th in Rebounding-6.2 per game;
3. 4th in Field Goal %;
4. Not in top 15 for assists;
5. Not in top 15 for Free Throw %;
6. 1st in Blocked Shots- 4.25 per game;

Although his blocked shot statistic is overwhelming and his presense on defense is tremendous, are they enough to overcome what are obviously very ordinary scoring and rebounding statistics.
With regard to Coach of the Year, I would not be surprised if TOT won. There is a tremendous amount of petty jealosy amonsgt MAAC coaches as is evidenced by the fact that Joe Mihalic never ONCE all season voted for manhattan in the Coaches poll.
If Mihalic gets one vote for COY it will be a crime. He was picked to finish second and couldn't win a BIG game all year. He was 0-2 v. MC and Siena and 1-1 against FF. He needed a lst minute shot at home against a Marist Team without david Bennet their leading scorer in order to avoid finishing in 5th.

I hope your not suggesting that Gai should not be on the All-MAAC Team?????? He is on it for his defense, and its not just because of his blocked shots, its because of his intimidation. Its to bad they don't keep stats for "Hurries" or "altering someones arc" Gai would be #1 by far. He has the most impact on the defensive side of the ball of any player in the MAAC.

I think his offesnive numbers are pretty good for someone who is still learning to play the game. Some stats are hidden however, as he was just short of making the minimum number of 3-pointers, otherwise he would have ranked 2nd in 3P%. Also, Gai is #1 in defensive rebounds. Unlike other players who get a lot of O-Boards off their own missed shots, Gai's dunks do not miss too often.

If you had to pick 5 guys from the MAAC to play a game against another talented team or all star team, would Deng Gai be one of your starting 5 ?

I would choose him.

His lower scoring is representative of his team's scoring style (very spread out) rather than his scoring ability. Otherwise you could try to argue Keydren Clark is one of the 5 best players in the country with his scoring numbers.

When you prepare to play Fairfield, your offense must prepare to face Deng Gai. He, for the most part, shuts down any MAAC team's inside game. He doesn't have to score a point to influence the outcome of a game. Don't tell me he isn't one of the 5 best players in the MAAC.

Quite simply, without Deng Gai, the Stags are probably no better than a fifth or sixth place team in the league! And considering he is still in his early years of learning the game, the prospects of great improvement, particularly on offense, is a wonderful thought for Stag fans.
