Re: NIT Bid? -- Sobro, 12:12:19 03/11/03 Tue
FF gets an NIT home game, plain and simple. A good rpi, a first class facility, a name player, a 5,000 person guarantee, and a crowd of 6,200 + at the New Haven Coliseum the last time they hosted with both schools (Providence and FF) on spring break. If you get the right Big East bubble team that doesn't make it, you have a shot at 7,000.

Re: NIT Bid? -- alchemist76, 15:04:58 03/11/03 Tue
Fairfield is no lock for the NIT. The RPI rating which will go down by the end of the week doesn't guarantee anything. Also, the allure of having a team from the New York Metropolitan Area no longer exists since the tournament has gone national; only the semis and finals are now played at MSG. Can you really guarantee 5000 will show up at Bridgeport? If they play a Big East team like Seton Hall who is a likely lock for the NIT, they might draw 5000. My question is how many would be Fairfield fans? I suspect Stag fans will be a minority in the stands. If they match Fairfield at Seton Hall, there will likely be 8000-9000 in the stands. If you were on the NIT committee, would you really send Seton Hall to play at Fairfield with low attendance a likelihood or play it at Seton Hall where a big turnout is pretty much a guarantee. The answer is obvious which is why Fairfield has very little chance of getting a game at Harbor Yards. You also got to remember that the MAAC and Fairfield were held in much higher esteem than they are now when they played Providence.

Re: NIT Bid? -- jenningsbeach, 16:16:53 03/11/03 Tue
There's no guarantee Seton Hall will draw 9,000 people to the Meadowlands for an NIT game. They had a nice run in February, but in the end, it's another year without an NCAA appearance. 6,000 tops. Think Providence or St. John's or Georgetown will draw 8,000-9,000 for an NIT game? No way. URI? Brown? Princeton?
I don't recall the MAAC's conference rating in 1996, but it couldn't be much higher than the 15 or 16 of this season. Esteem? That's nonsense.
The 1996 Fairfield-Providence game was played in New Haven—in an arena best described as a rathole—because the tournament knew it had a better chance of drawing people in southern Connecticut than Providence. Big East fans don't want to hear about the NIT. Syracuse drew 3,000 to an NIT game a few years ago, UConn even less at Gampel in the mid-90s. Same deal now. The NIT will consider which teams actually WANT to be a part of the tournament, and if that school is willing to pony up some cash (guarantee ticket sales), well, see you at Harbor Yard, dude. The first beer's on me.
Maybe I'm wrong about all this, but I think Fairfield is a lock for the NIT—and I like our chances to host a first-round game. Hey, we'll know Sunday.

Re: NIT Bid? -- Running Man, 21:16:25 03/11/03 Tue
That NIT game back in '96 was played in New Haven only because the Providence Civic Center was not available on the night the game was to be played. So the alternate New Haven venue was used.

NIT Bid - Holy Cross or Big East -- JoeStag, 22:51:05 03/11/03 Tue
About 5 Big East teams could be in the NIT.... St John's Providence, Seton Hall, Villanova and Georgetown..... Didn't Hoyas turn down NIT bid last year..... NIT won't forget that. All those teams would be great draws in Big East crazy CT.
My choice would Be Holy Cross losing to American in the Finals of Patriot on Friday.

Re: NIT Bid - Holy Cross or Big East -- jenningsbeach, 23:45:38 03/11/03 Tue
I believe Villanova has taken itself out of the postseason mix, and I think St. John's will get a home game. Seton Hall and Providence are definite possibilities from the Big East, URI or Richmond from the A-10, Princeton or Brown from the Ivy. If they lose, Holy Cross makes a lot of sense. Wagner could be out there, too, if St. Francis knocks them off tomorrow.
If we play Monday or Tuesday, the opponent will have to be local. I'd love to get a shot at Seton Hall.

Just checked RPIs -- jenningsbeach, 00:41:37 03/12/03 Wed
Princeton (144) and Brown (145) are probably too high to make the NIT. It's also conceivable that six Big East teams—Pitt, ND, Syracuse, UConn, BC (46) and Seton Hall (36)—could make the NCAAs.
Forgot about Drexel, with an RPI of 86, out of the Colonial. We could get them.

Don't Be Surprised If... -- Stagman, 11:32:28 03/12/03 Wed
The Eastern portion of the NIT becomes a Big East/ACC challenge scenario.
The ACC will likely send: NC State, UNC, Ga Tech, UVA, Clemson
The Big East will likely send: Providence, Nova, St Johns, Seton Hall, G'town
Any matchups between those schools would be decent draws and certainly more favorable than games involving Drexel or Fairfield. It would also guarantee that name teams would advance to the next round and thus guarantee another decent gate.
I also would not doubt that Siena might get the nod over FU simply because of the greater potential to draw.
I hope I am wrong on all counts.

Re: Don't Be Surprised If... -- jenningsbeach, 13:04:22 03/12/03 Wed
Come to think of it, the Monday and Tuesday games match up the No. 33-40 seeds. Which means we wouldn't play a major-conference team until the second round. If we get a home game next week, the opponent will likely be Drexel, URI or Richmond.
Since Fairfield is selling tickets to a Monday or Tuesday game, I assume the NIT has contacted the school and given us the go-ahead. With the NIT announcing the field late Sunday night, a Monday game means less than 24 hours to sell tickets—which is not conducive to drawing a good crowd. So the first mini-round host teams must know they're in already. Not sure a Fairfield home game is a done deal yet—things are still fluid, I suppose. But it must be close to being a done deal.
