Subject: Goodbye NIT - Better Win the Tourney

This loss ensured that we will NOT be getting an NIT invite. Wins over St. Peters and Loyola won't count for anything at this point, except for seeding in the Tourney. I obviously didn't see the game, and have read all of the posts below.

As far as TOT, many people are posting about how bad a game coach he is, and I will not ever declare him to be a bench genius. However, I don't want to start over, and I do like the players that he brings in. Can we get an assistant who can teach him the fundamentals of coaching? Will he allow this? I can't believe that we can't get the ball inbounds at the end of the game, and get a shot off!!!! He has improved, however, and the team has as well. We need a big man, and fast.

I am also amazed, if a below post is correct, that Gai again only gets 5 shots???? How many rebounds (it was less than 6)? This is from a superior athlete with outstanding ability.

The funny thing about this season is that it is not an overall success yet. As I posted at the start of the year, NIT berth with 19-20 wins or NCAA birth with a solid season. We can still do the latter, win out and everyone will be happy. Anything less, unacceptable. NIT birth, as STAGAL posted below, would have done wonders for attendance if we got a home game (it would have been the best marketing tool available).

The substitution patterns, as mentioned by Stagman below, are utterly rediculous. There is no need to pull players that are "hot" and playing well. People can continue to have confidence in Kudjo, I don't, and don't like seeing him in the game. Thomson, abeit a hard worker, brings nothing to the table, again, in my opinion.

We are left with a guard offense (when Oscar is gone) with currently no ability to consistently hit the 3?

The last thing that sort of bothers me, again as Stagman mentioned below, is our inability to play competitively against higher caliber opponents (DePaul, Duke, UConn over the years, etc.) This trait is what will cost us NIT berths, along with the silly losses to Charleston Southern, Harvard and Rider.

We are not finishing strong, and although I hate to admit this, I believe we will be out of the tourney in the Quarters, (at best, the semis). I am not expecting to see us on ESPN this year. Getting rid of TOT, is probably not the answer, requiring him to become a better bench coach is (and I think he can be).

92,

I have to disagree with a lot of youcomments, cause I think they are based on false assumptions.

- We shot great form the outside yesterday, 8-17 from three, and a lot of good outside shots. The announcers were commenting how sharp we passed the ball and were moving to get open looks.

- 5 shots by Gai was low but he was in Foul trouble for most of the game. I would have been more worried by the stat that he had 0 rebounds, 0 blocks, and 0 Fouls after he picked up his 3rd foul 57 sec into the 2nd half. Gai made some key 3-pointers in the 2nd half but it was NOT our offense that was the problem, it was our interior Defense. Check the Stats.... Reaves 9-12, and Mendez 8-13.... that was the difference in the game. It was not one persons fault but it was All the big guys defense..... but not Thomson as he did not hardly play.

As far as fundamentals..... we had only 10 turnovers with 15 assits, shoot 59% from the floor, and 81% from the foul line. Fundamentals were not our problem, it was interior defense. Normally our stron suit but mendez/reaves do cause us trouble.

Losing 2 games in a row in the last minute is very disturbing.

You may disagree, and it may be because you are talking about this single game. I am talking about the season, and I am not assuming anything. Again, goodbye NIT. We, game in and game out, are not good fundamentally and our not a three point team. I didn't blame anybody for this loss, including Thomson. I merely feel that although he is a hard working, that he doesn't add much value other than his 5 fouls to give up. I also posted much about TOT, and his need to become a better bench coach. Bottom line - this season is not extraordinary, it is decent. Good enough for us to keep him, not so good to be considered overally successful. Don't expect 3,500 a night next year in Bridgeport unless this team gets to the postseason. Then, we may have a chance. We are NOT finishing the year strongly. In addition, if Gai had 4 fouls in the first half, hypothetically that is, I STILL WANT HIM GETTING MORE THAN 5 SHOTS!!! If our interior defense (and I saw Niagara - and they are stellar inside, they are good, at best) broke down, than maybe we need to bulk up (we look like Children compared to other teams when it comes to strength and bodies) and make use of that wonderful weight room and learn how to play interior defense, as opposed to having Gai try to swat 25 shots a night into the stands. What ever happended to D'ing your man straight up and boxing him after the shot? I am still amazed at how weak we are when it comes to strength and size (width, not height). Nick Delfico looks to be the only player that found the weightroom in the offseason.

CT post said that Delfico had stomach illness and thats why he only played 10 minutes. But Does anyone know why Thomson only got 4 minutes. Of all games, I would have thought he would be most effective against Niagara, especially whn Gai got in foul trouble.

I think we are Big enough (breadth-wise) with Garcia, Thomson and Delfico. 2 of those 3 did not play, but we should still have enough to get the job done.

And is Fellecia so ineffective that he could not be used to try to stop someone on the inside who is killing us?

Amazing how Reaves and Mendez rip us apart, and the only big men to get any minutes are Garcia and Gai. If that doesn't show a complete lack of confidence in Thomson and Fellecia, I'm not sure what does.

Amen, brother. Fellicia has not been given an opportunity to play while Thomson is misused when he's in.
