Subject: I must have been listening to a different game yesterday

After reading many of the posts on the game, I have a totally diffferent take on this game.

I would agree that putting Maxwell on Reaves at the 1:30 does not sound like the right move, but nobody else was stopping either. Garcia had to come out he had 4 fouls. Oscar came right back in and scoreed 2, so the Reaves/Max play was quickly nullified. Thomso would have been a better defender, but I would like to know why he played only 4 minutes.

The big turnaround in this game was our inability to stop them after we had a 9 point lead with 11 min to go. In 5 successive possessions, Niagara scored a 3 point play..... 3 the traditionalway, 2 beyond the arc. We cannot have that happen..... we lost the lead too quick. We also need stops at the end of the game, on Darden's shot..... even thought announcer said that he made a tough shot.

Gai's was in foul trouble the whole game, or at least he played like he was. He only played 5 minutes the first half as he picked up 2 quick fouls, and got his 3rd 57 second into the 2nd half. From there he was a non factor defensively (0 pts, 0rebs on 18 min). Ithought I would never say Gai was a non factor defensively..... he also never picked up another foul. That was a big part of the game.

I disagree 100% with the comments on the substitution patterns. First of all we basically played only 7 players.... this was the least substituted game this year.

When we were up 5 in the first half with 5 min to go, we did keep our hot players in the game. Max and Garcia had just score 8 and 6 consecutve points, and they were in their in the final 5.

We did go small (3 guards) in the final 5 minutes of the half, and that did not work, going from 5 up to 2 down.... but that was the same basic unit that also brought us back from 6 down at the beginning of the half to 9 up with 11 to go. Your have to take the good with the bad, but the end result was overall positive.

The Kudjo steal, and missed out of control layup was huge, but you cannot critisize him for trying to be agressive and make a play. the problem was that he was out of control on a 1-1 move ahead of the field. He has done that many times before, sometimes with great success, and sometimes out of control. He just has to get better at it. Darden made his 1-1 shots, Kudjo did not..... with more experience that will change. I cannot fault him for being aggressive.

Bottom like is that for the first 30 minutes, we were playing very good with a 9 point lead. If they game ended there, it would have been one our best games of the year. Niagara shot 13 of 21 the second half.... that was the big differnce, we did not stop them.

Kudjo - 3 for 11 from the floor, 1-4 from 3. He should be criticized for being out of control late in the game. Protect the basketball, and get a good look. You can't get better, in my opinion, at being out of control. The decision is a foul line jumpshot (which we never do on the break) or pull it back (the wise choice).

Also, what I think most posters, and I could be wrong, are concerned about Joe is how the club is finishing. 8-6 at home, with only one Big East caliber opponent, is pretty bad and 3-3 in the month of February outright sucks, especially against who we have played. We may have been decent fundamentally yesterday, but I find that even in games that we have won in double digits, we haven't been running with all cylinders.

We are young, and I think that it is critical to get a 6-6 to 6-8 stud who can play right away, play our best game 3 point shooter at the 2 (Bell, Van Shaack, etc.,) and let the others develop. I am actually amazed at our amount of wins based on our inability to shoot the basketball from 3, unwillingness to box out, rather, rely on jumping ability, and one player who can play in the post (Garcia). It is utterly amazing that we have won 15 games. A good amount of rebounds are "loose balls" where we outhustle.

As I said below, our lack of strength is exploited when we play Niagara, Manhattan, and other teams with big bodies. Did they lock the weightroom all spring and summer?

Not often I say this, but I agree with Stag92.

My big complaint is how this team has finished. Sure the overall record looks good, but they are only 4-5 during the last 3-4 weeks. That tells me that the 7-0 start was, more than likely, a flash in the pan. Let's remember that, even during that winning streak, many of us felt uneasy because the team just didn't seem to be playing all that well.

Our hope was that they would actually improve as the season went on and would truly have a shot at winning the MAAC. Regrettably, they have not improved. I don't think anyone expected a 15-3, 16-2, or 17-1 season. But with 11 games remaining, a 7-4 finish (and 14-4 MAAC record) was not unreasonable. Right now they are 11-5, with no guarantees that they win both against SPC and Loyola. That is truly disappointing.

Stagman - I believe you said you didn't get to many games because of location (I'm sure you would be at every game if your were in the area). It's been even harder to watch, hearing that we win all of these games, many on the road in the MAAC, and than watching them at home give, at best, mediocre performances. Take Canisius for example, Kudjo decided to show up and got 18, and had a big night. We held Dux to nothing - yet, we win by only 4???? I can't think of one home game where everything has clicked - NOT ONE. It would be scary what the results of this season would have been if we showed up to play on our homecourt. We have two quality wins this year, UNCW and Manhattan (road). I don't want to hear Yale, because they should 30% or so that day (had they made anything we would have lost).

We are lucky to be where we are, and yet, could be someplace much better. Pretty strange.

I am also disapointed on how we are ending the season, losing home games, and especially with losing 2 close games in a row. I hope that losing Close games is not a trend, but a few big plays defenively or offensively and we could be 17-8, in first place, and sitting in great position..... thats the frustrating part, we were so close.

I find it ironic that people say almost in the same post that we should be winning 19-20 games, but are also lucky that we have 15 wins..... can't have it both ways.

We are, what we are..... one of the top 5 teams in the MAAC, and probably a 17 win team. I do like our chances in the MAAC Tourney, as I think we have the depth and defense to carry us. And having a .500 record against the top teams in the MAAC (Manhattan, Iona, Niagara, Siena) gives me a lot of hope.

I'm the poster stating we could have had it both ways - and we could have. That's what makes it so ironic, if we played at all cylinders, we may have been a 20 win team (fundamentally better, 3 point shooting, etc). At the same time, if you look at wins like Yale, Canisius, and many road wins, it could have been much worse. Joe, it is hypothetical. I understand we are where we are - that should be pretty obvious. A 500 record against the top four teams in the MAAC, considering how we are playing lately, doesn't make us very dangerous at this point. We are a strange team, we could go out the first day we play or, if we get on a streak, could win it all. Not many teams can say that, in our league.

I really do think the top 5 MAAC Schools have had remarkable similar seasons. All have had losses against easy opponents and have had their ups and downs. Manhattan has been the most consistent, while Siena has been the most inconsistent but done well against the top 5. Here are the records of the Top 5 against the Top 5:

Manhattan 4-2
Siena 4-3
Fairfield 4-4
Iona 3-4
Niagara 3-5

Manhattan still has to play Siena and Iona. The closeness of the records of the top 5 will make for a great Tournament.
