Subject: Future tourney sites

I got the following info from a pretty reliable source:
2004 - Albany
2005 - Buffalo

We are making a strong case for 2006 in Bridgeport and we may have a good shot on this.

In order for tourney to be successful it should be in a central location and have a team which the fans back. IMO, if the MAAC doesn't do well this year, then the league chair must re-evaluate future locations. We all know Siena draws well, esp. if they make it to the finals. I believe that Harbor Yard would also draw well due to central location/having half the league within an hours drive, and having the chance of those same teams making the finals. I must admit that I have never driven to Buffalo when they hosted the tourney in prior years. How many of you made it there (not only FF fans but from the other 8 teams)? Did they draw well in Buffalo when they hosted the games? What good is having it in places that will/don't draw well?

2004 it will be held in Albany, then Buffalo in 2005 (although there is possibility of a change on that location, hint Bridgeport)........and a return to Albany for 2006 is going to be finalized very soon in written format..............the MAAC is very adamant about keeping Albany in the rotation "every other year"..........all of this comes from more reliable sources that are associated with the Pepsi Arena with league connections. Still, I pull for Bridgeport over any other location (except Albany of course)...........would look forward to you rolling out the red carpet for the Dead Zone denizens for a change, LOL

Isn't it a totally done deal that 05 is in Buffalo? I thought that was even announced by the MAAC a year ago. I can't see the MAAC renegging on it now.

[> [> [> [> hey GuyF -- Siena ARCatech, 09:25:46 02/26/03 Wed

all I know is that there is a buy out in the contract.........leaving the MAAC an option to change if they feel the need, which was a smart move on their part. Now I am not saying that it WILL happen, but it could happen.............perhaps they want to see how Trenton does first before any further decision is made!

Unless Buffalo requests to back out, the MAAC can't go around canceling contracts. It wouldn't make the MAAC look to good, its not like people are breaking down the doors to get into MAAC contests wherever they are held. Look for Buffalo in 05, Alb 06 and Bridgeport in 07. Hopefully never again to be held in Trenton.

that is from a MAAC/Pepsi Arena contact who is very reliable.........I guess the MAAC is just covering the "possibility".........but you are right, I don't see them backing out on Buffalo..........although I wish they would!

[> [> [> [> [> [> [> Why not Bridgeport then in '06? -- STAGAL, 09:53:39 02/26/03 Wed

It sounds like the next 2 years may already be locked. Bridgeport then should be given the chance then for '06 rather than returning to Albany again. Given our location, we might do just as good as them.

1. We've already covered this. The MAAC is basically under contract through 05, with 05 being in Buffalo, and that means that they'll return to Albany in 06. Assuming no contracts are bought out, the earliest the tournament would go to BPort is 07.

Also, please don't construe this as being against BPort hosting it. Quite the contrary; I live about 10 minutes from the arena. :-)

2. BPort will do well, much better than Buffalo and ridiculously better than Trenton, but it likely won't approach Albany's numbers, at least not right away.

I'm not against BPort hosting it. It just makes too much sense, it should be rotated between Alb and BPort.

but it would hardly get the same support/media coverage that it gets in Albany..........that would be ALOT to ask and hope for. GuyF, what is up with that Westchester area Arena? That might be an interesting site to throw in the rotation as well, if and when that gets done!!!!!!

[> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> Oh, I disagree with that. -- GuyF, 11:47:11 02/26/03 Wed

All of the "usual" reporters that make the trip to Albany to cover their respective teams--as well as a few reporters who aren't regulars during the season but do cover the tournament, such as those from the NYC papers--would all be in BPort.

Also, the CT Post is a VERY "local" paper, and I'm sure they'd make a big to-do about the tournament the way the Albany papers do. I'd also guess that the New Haven Register and Stamford Advocate would also get into the act.

Before judging my opinion here, remember that I've been credentialed to cover the MAAC Tournament for years and see all the same faces there! :-)

Maybe I'm just being very optimistic, but I just think the level of success for the tournament at Bridgeport will far exceed what we've seen out of Buffalo and what we'll see out of Trenton this year. I'm not saying it will match what Albany accomplishes, but it might not be too far off. Time will tell!

[> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> This is getting scary -- Tony, 13:17:31 02/26/03 Wed

Gotta agree with Guy here. Media attention will be fine, in fact most of the media folks will make the trip to Trenton. Its support of the locals that's somewhat in question. I do think BPort stands a excellent chance of succeding mainly because so many teams are within a 3 hour drive. I think the bottom line here is Bport will eventually get the event and my guess is they will support the tournament fine, from both a media and fans in the stands prespective.

I mean its easy for us fans to see that, can anybody tell me what in the world was Ensor thinking in booking the tournament in Trenton?

[> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> A theory... -- GuyF, 13:41:29 02/26/03 Wed

When the BPort Arena was just being hatched, the SBA was already in place, and Ensor was willing to consider any facility that wasn't in Buffalo. Then, if you recall, in the SBA's first season, they held that doubleheader pitting Siena vs St. Peter's and Iona vs Rider, which drew pretty well (2-3K?). It was at this blessed event where I got to meet the one and only RiderRaver, who was also the victim of Maureen Ruland's classic "Shut up Fatty!" I believe I also met Peacock that day as well.

Anyway, the moderate success of the twofer was probably enough for Ensor to give Trenton a try. Unfortunately for him, every Rider game at the SBA that hasn't been against Rutgers or Princeton has drawn flies.

Another question: didn't the NEC hold its tournament there last year, or perhaps the year before? Can anyone get their hands on those attendance numbers?

"Might" do as well as Albany. The Pespsi is a known quanity, Bridgeport is not. I do think Bridgeport will do fine, can you gurantee it will do better than the Pepsi? I think not, that's why the tournament will be back in Alb in 06. It deserves it for years of support

[> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> Buffalo could back out in 2005 -- JoeStag, 10:17:52 02/26/03 Wed

My understanding is that with the sale of the financially troubled Buffalo Sabres/Arena that the owners of the Arena might not want to continue the Contract with the MAAC. Especially since the Buffalo arena put up a big $ guarentee, so big of a guarentee, that it guarenttees the Buffalo arena to lose money on the MAAC Tourney.

If Buffalo does not want to backout, the tourney is there in 2005. If they do, Bridgeport would be interested.

Put the tournament in the garden and leave it there permanently. No home court advantages and the city to boot. Everybody loves the garden. Move the Big East tournament over a day or two.

[> Don’t think so Al -- Tony, 06:30:10 02/26/03 Wed

It’s been the MAAC’s long-standing position to not go more than a year at the Pepsi, and it makes sense to me, Siena’s fan base is larger than Fairfield, Iona and Manhattan COMBINED. Not to mention record attendance at last years MAAC tournament.

Now that’s not to say I don’t think Bridgeport should get the tournament. On the contrary I think Bridgeport should get the opportunity to show what it can do as soon as possible, if that means taking Buffalo’s spot in 2005 so be it, If not then I’d be shocked to see Bridgeport get the tournament before 2007. Bet the house, its a lock that the MAAC tournament will be in Albany 2006.

Bridgeport will probably be a good bet for the tourney but is not a sure thing, Albany is as close to a sure thing as the MAAC has

One other thin StagAl, if you want to register for the Siena board you have to provide a Email address, it will be kept confidential

[> [> Tony is right. -- GuyF, 08:37:44 02/26/03 Wed

First off, it is already "official" that the 04 MAAC tourney is in Albany and the 05 is in Buffalo. Those are done deals.

Tony is right, the MAAC won't go more than a year at a time away from the Pepsi, so it is very safe to assume that 06 will be in Albany.

I think 07 in Bridgeport is a very very strong possibility, though. Trenton likely won't get another sniff after this year, and Buffalo COULD continue to get chances every five years if the schools up there cry enough. But if Bridgeport is monsterously successful, hopefully the MAAC will do the right thing and just keep the two sites.

It can be revisited again if/when an arena in Westchester is built.

Buffalo is a joke for the MAAC tournament, but Trenton will be an embarrassment.
