Subject: Random Thoughts

1) Don't think for a minute that it was FF's decision to play the DH on Monday. Gene Doris is doing the noble thing defending the league, but that was a LEAGUE DECISION!!!!!
There is no way Doris undoes whatever good will he has created with the season ticketholders by playing. He's too sharp for that. That decision came directly from the MAAC commisioner, Sidney Greenstreet, who wasn't there anyway. It's just as well as the concessions were closed.

2) I think we can all agree on what will get fannies in the Arena seats next season; an NCAA appearancce. That said, there has to be a better approach because the one being employed does not work.
FF must do a better job recruiting community fans. I don't want to hear that nonsense about FF competing with NY pro teams. The people you have to get interested is kids. A sharp marketer would get the schedules of all local middle and high schools when they come out in the summer. Find the common off days during the week, and plan night games the night before. Make sure every school, school team and every youth group between New Haven and NYC get a copy of the schedule with a brochure for group and youth rates. Make a follow up call to every school. The best way to get adults to do ANYTHING is to get their kids to pester them. Get young people interested and their parents will bring them. In addition, there MUST be a youth basketball game at halftime of every game.

3) Get the games back on commercial radio. As with everything else, its about money. It supposedly has gotten too expesnive to buy radio time on a station with a good enough signal. While it is expensive, the university could use their Business school to recoup some of the money by selling the advertising time. I keep hearing what a great busines school FF has, let's see it in action. Give marketing and business students credit for getting out and selling ad time. You can't beat the experience and everyone would benefit. In addition, FF fans would no longer have to deal with the on again off again webcast WVOF gives. Loyal FF fans have been forced to listen to opponents' webcasts numerous times this season and it makes the University look second rate. How many times can you tick off your fans? If you're worried about the students, WVOF could still broadcast the games and have students engineer, and do pre, halftime and postgames around the commercial broadcasts.

3) Talk to FF students and they'll tell you that out of the 3,200 or so undergrads, 10% are really interested in following the school's athletic programs, 10% are casually interested, 20% would consider coming to a big game like the Manhattan game, and 60% could care less. The sad part is that the administration has completely alienated the most loyal 10% by eliminating football and hockey. All these students hear about is how well off the school is and how well the fundraising campaigns do. It's always $5 million for this $10 million for this and $25 million for this and then they're told the school didn't have the money for two non scholarship sports? What a shame!

Agree about getting youths in for the games. High School games conflicts should not be an issue - isn't it standard for high schools to play Tuesdays and Fridays ? Those are the days to stay away from.

It seems like we had more youth groups attending games in Alumni Hall rather than the arena. The baseball teams will invite the kids onto the field for the national anthem or the seventh inning strech. Are pre game or halftime shoot arounds or games possible ?

And those concessions better be open for those kids. Having no concessions or one stand for every 750 people or so if small time thinking. Next year I'm going to get a sales tax number and sell hot dogs and soda's from my seat if this nonsense continues.

How about having a promotion(or a policy) whereby each paying adult is permitted to bring a kid(say up through high school age) free to the game. You would not fill the arena but there would be more fans in attendance and more paying customers than under present circumstances. Also this would help concessions, since I have yet to see a kid without an appetite.

Of Course all these points are obvious and right on. Too bad everyone can see them except University Officials.

i agree these are all wonderful ideas, but i'm not sure how feasable some of them are. community support is key and targeting a younger crowd (high school, middle school) is smart, but are kids going to pay that much to go to a game? the reason there were alot of kids at alumni hall was because the tickets were cheaper OR the tickets were given away. based on fairfield's alledged financial situation (see football and hockey), i'm not sure how quick they will be to give away tickets (and eat the expense). that being said, what do they have to lose by doing so? it's not like they'd be giving away tickets that people would have bought (after two year there, it's clear the demand simply isn't there)

on a separate note, it will be interesting to compare the attendance of the stand alone women's game at the arena (friday) with the rescheduled game now being played at alumni hall in terms of attendance and atmosphere. i think this is a move they should consider on a more regular basis with the women's squad
