I think 4 more wins should do it, but would sure feel better about 5. The Rider loss just hurt so much. Three away games left, which, for this team, is good!

The NIT expanded to 40 teams last year, which helps (www.nit.org).

I predicted about a week ago that if we didn't make the NCAA, that we could not only get an NIT bid, but host a game at the Arena as well. That was based upon the assumption that we would lose only to Niagara the rest of the way, and/or make it to the finals at Trenton. While the Rider loss was not foreseen, we in effect have taken one loss already, and must win at Niagara tomorrow. Another loss here, or not making the finals, would put a nail in our coffin for this season. I believe that if we do go on to host an NIT game, that we could easily sell 6K seats at Harbor Yard, and possibly 7K.

Would a first round NIT game coincide with spring break?

Here is a list of eastern teams that are likely looking at NIT bids if they don't win their conference tourneys:

A-10: Rhode Island
B-E: Villanova
B-E: Boston College
B-E: Seton Hall
B-E: West Virginia
Col: Virginia Commonwealth?
ACC: North Carolina
ACC: NC State
ACC: Virginia
ACC: Clemson

8 out of 10 are from the Big East or ACC and the NIT would probably love to have those teams and their large fan bases.
URI would provide a nice matchup with BC and a VCU/UVA matchup could draw interest in Virginia.

We can probably assume that some mid-major tourney favorites (Manhattan, UNCW, Boston U?) won't win their tourneys, so that likely throws 1-2 more teams into the Eastern mix.

I think the Stags might have to get to at least 20 wins. Even at 19, they probably would not be chosen over a Big East or ACC team that has at least a .500 record, especially given that they have been non-competitive versus highly regarded majors.

I would love to Boston College as the 1st choice, but I also would like to see Holy Cross, if they don't win the Patriot.

Would be a heck of a kick in the pants for the Huskies. I would LOVE to see that happen...

Spring Break goes from Fri, Mar 7th to Sun, Mar 16th.

Students are away for the MAAC Tourney, but be back for any NCAA or NIT game.

I agree to assure an NIT bid I'd like to see us:

- beat Niagara
- win our final 2 regular season games
- advance to the MAAC final

...But, if we can't achieve all three, I still think we'd be in good shape if we win our final two, and then win 2 in the MAAC tourney to get to the final (and hopefully win the final to make all this mute!), assuming Manhattan wins the Tournament. If Manhattan gets knocked off, things could get interesting.

The NIT usually takes one MAAC team, and sometimes two. Has there eve ben a year recently when they didn't take at least one MAAC team? I'd be surprised if they didn't take any this year, and if Manhattan gets knocked off in the MAAC, could see them taking two teams.

The MAAC sent no one to the NIT in 2001 and 1999. There are no guarantees that the MAAC gets someone in.

I believe we could get 5K in Bridgeport, possibly more based on the opponent. 7K is pushing it, we may need an outstanding opponent. 19 wins will do it. Also, you and everyone else have predicted the NIT, your not going out on a limb here.

92,

I think your right.... if we get to 19 wins we would probably get in. 18 wins would put us in the NIT Bubble.

Unfortunately, the Rider loss, made this Niagara game much bigger than origianlly expected. Winning on the road will be tough, but the bigger problem is that this is probably a bigger game for Niagara than it is for us.

It's huge for us, and huger for them..... how do you like that english.

[> [> [> [> No, the home game -- STAGAL, 10:06:56 02/22/03 Sat

I am quite aware that the NIT possibility has been floated around by quite a few, but what I mentioned a while back was the possibility of getting a home game at the Arena. Given that we have some ties to the NIT committee, a beautiful new venue, and a history of having hosted a successful NIT game a few years ago in New Haven, I continue to think that if we finish up strongly that this will happen.

In addition, I have stated that we will likely draw at least 6K and perhaps 7K (depending on the opponent). We drew somewhere around 6250 in NH for what amounted to an away game for us. This will be the biggest game west of the Connecticut River in a long, long time, and if successfully marketed, it will do quite well. Keep in mind that GD would guarantee 5K, and he has to be conservative in his numbers or probably take a financial loss.

Let me also go further out on a limb here, if that game happens to be successful at the gate and is obviously a victory, that we could possibly host a SECOND game. I think that if we don't make the dance, that the above scenario would be the shot in the arm which could boost attendance numbers in future years. GO STAGS!!
