I've got to take Gene Doris and Fr. Kelley to task on this, particularly the football. It was great to see make them the commitment to football six years, but to have it dropped in such a short time has to be defined as a failure. If I started a division at my company, invested that much money into it, and then had to shut it down so soon, I'd be looking for a new job.

The real shame, as someone said, is for the student-athletes who are underclassmen.

This certainly won't help recruiting for other non-basketball sports, either...how do you know that baseball or softball, for example, won't be next.

i agree 100%....where is the accountability? not so much from doris' end, but APK. all the quotes and PR indicate to me that this was his call.

i'll go a step further and say that this will effect the recruitment of basketball as well. it remains to be seen how fairfield will recruit/enroll minorities without the assistance of football (we all know football wasn't the sole means by which fairfield recruited minorities, but they were a big factor). that said, i would bet that tim o'toole and staff liked having the increase in the minority student-athlete population that football provided, in order to show recruits diversity. i don't think this will be a great impact on recruiting, but i can imagine it would enter the mind of some minority recruits. they will be stepping onto a very white campus in a very white section of the state/country.
