Subject: easy W, as expected

Pure and simple, we beat a weaker and less talented team today. Our D shut down Clark, and SPC was outclassed by our front line, especially the monster in the middle, Deng Gai. Ajou seems to be struggling still, does anyone know of his foot status? Attendance was poor, with very little student turnout. While I was expecting 3K+, it looked to be more in the mid 2K range. Did anyone hear the #? Women's team was only down to Siena at half by 7. Look for 2 Post articles tomorrow, as Puma and Elsberry were both there today.

I agree- it was a fairly easy win today, especially the first half. The Stags lost some rythym into the second half, but still maintained the 20 pt lead they secured in the first half. I agree that Ajou looks weak. He doesnt seem to have any strength to grab those rebounds and actually HOLD ONTO them while in the 'thick of it'. He also seems to have trouble running. Many of the posts on this board wonder why TOT doesn't play Ajou more...to me it seems that Ajou just isn't up to par. We seem to be a weaker team offensive and defensively when he is on the court.

I also felt O'Toole should be playing ajou more, but he did look to be lackin arm strenth today. There was have been 5 balls ripped away from him. He didn't play well at all.

That being said, he looked very good against Siena. Does anyone know if Ajou is sick right now. With his foot hurt, I would have thought Ajou spent a lot of time working on armstrength over the summer, but you wouldn't know it today.

I see progress each game with Ajou .... but its obviously not happening as quick as we all expected. Lateral movement and the ability to up strong are the next hurdles for him. He is doing some good things, and contributing, but we all know he is capable of so much more.

Patience.... He wil reach 100% by the NCAA's :)

I hope so. I really like Ajou and would like to see him end his career on a positive note. Ajou has done a lot more for this program than what you see in the box score. He brought attention, credibility, and a level of interest from UConn fans. But perhaps most importantly, we would not have landed Deng Gai without Ajou at FU. While its yet to be seen, Gai could develop into the biggest impact player the Stags have ever had. (No I don't think he's there yet. But how many of the all time greats (Bowman, Francis, George, DeSantis, Groom, Phillips, Bradford et al had this kind of a sophomore season...)

Fairfield has never had a player with Gai's defensive impact, not even close. He is also a major threat on Alley-oops and O-boards. Impact Player is the best word to describe him.

As far as players that had immediate impact..... Joe Desantis and Tony George came in as freshman and scored big numbers even as frosh. I think George had some games in the 30's, while Desantis had a lot of 20pts games in his initial year.

And then there was Phil Rogers who who played his first year on the Frosh team and averaged 35ppg and 17rpg. How about this line-up, just need a SF (Billy Jones????):

PG Joe Desantis
2G Tony George
SF ???????
PF Phil Rogers
CC Deng Gai

How about Hank Foster ? (Would he be a PF ?)

SonofDoc,

I forgot about Hank Foster as an impact player. That fills out my Impact line-up:

PG: Joe Desantis
2G: Tony George
SF: Phil Rogers
PF: Hank Foster
CC: Deng Gai

Any additions or subtractions??????

Never saw Rodgers or Foster - Would you put Daren Phillip in this line-up?

If he continues an his improvement pace, Deng Gai will prove to be the best player your school has ever produced, and a 1st round pick, either next year, or the following. The interesting player that I see is Terrance Todd. He has skills, he could be scary by next year, or the following. He can be as good as he wants to be, when was the last time anyone could say that about a FF guard.

I find it hard to assess a player like Todd. In terms on impact, I think of Greg Francis, and Troy Bradford having much more immediate impact than Todd from a scoring perspective. However, they played on no talent teams and consquently shown brightly by comparison to teammates. How would we perceive Todd if he was at loyola or Rider? Would he be scoring 20 points a game if he had gone to Saint Peters?

No way to know the answer to these questions, but it is very hard to compare players from different era's. I hope when all is said and done Todd proves to be a player of the magnitude you suggest.

Don't get infatuated with only scoring. Todd breaks down a defense like no on our team can. He makes everyone around him better. He is a special player.

Points are gravy with this kid. Not only can Todd break down defenses, he's fearless, especially at crunch time. The ball absolutely has to be in his hands down the stretch: He beats the press, refuses to turn it over, finds the open man and either hits the open shot or gets fouled. Has anyone noticed Todd has made 18 straight free throws?

He's going to be the best PG in school history, whether he scores another point or not.

Todd better than Joe DeSantis who was first team All-East at a time when all eastern teams, including current Big East and A-10 members, were part of the pool? Let's revisit this in March of 2006 after Todd finishes his F.U. career.

Todd is sure to be a star but he's got a very, very long way to go before becoming the best point in the school's history. We can only hope, but I'll take second or third best.

Cannot agree more with RM! Seems like you are way ahead of yourself. He'd have to get up to heaven to be with Joey D.

2500 ish according to the box score. I still thought it was a pretty good crowd for Superbowl Sunday and St Peters. I cant understand how that team beat Manhattan. We now have Yale and St Peters, as victims that have beat the Jaspers.

The Stags looked well polished tonight--I especially love how Deng Gai has become so selective on defense. It seems the staff has identified his tendency to try to block anything and everything and the foul trouble that has led to, and worked with him to prolong his presence in the games.

A perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
