Subject: Stags chances for Post Season Awards
Deng Gai has to be a lock to win the Defensive POY, for the second straight year.
Luis Flores has to be the leader for POY, but if the Stags could end up in first, Deng Gai might get some consideration..... but PPG has always been more importatnt in the POY voting.
ROW - Keydren Clark is a lock for that award, but for people who were at the Stags-Peacock game the other night, it would be hard to say that Todd did not derserve it.
All MAAC - Gai probaby first team, and Garcia, Delfico, and Todd have a shot at 3rd team.
All Rookie team - Todd a definte and Maxwell a probable
Coach of the Year - right now TOT has to be the leading candidate. If Manhattan runs the table, Gonzo could be the choice

All-Rookie -- Tony, 09:17:48 01/29/03 Wed
This is a tough year to pick the all rookie teams because the MAAC has so many good freshmen, right now I'd say the only 2 players a lock for the ALL Rookie team are Clark and Haddix, other players probably ahead of Todd and Maxwell at this point would be Burtt and Soliver and possible McCullogh of Iona and Jordan of Siena, Konovelchick of Manhattan will get consideration, Handy of Marist, Downey of Canisius and probably a few others I missed. I don't think I ever remember the MAAC having this many good freshmen in a single year

IMO, Todd has meant more to Fairfield than the other Frosh have meant to their team...... even Clark. In the ROW voting, Points and Stats mean the most, but for the yearly awards/teams, the coaches vote, and I think they consider more than stats..... which should give Todd an advantage being our PG. Right now I would say:
Todd
Clark
Haddix
Burtt
With a whole bunch still vying for the last spot

Re: All-Rookie points and politics -- reindeer fan, 13:48:14 01/29/03 Wed
Two factors are working against Todd. First there is a great amount of politicing campaigning that goes on between coaches to get votes for there players. In the past Farfield and o'toole seem to have come up on the short end of that. Secondly, points do seem to be the most important factor. We only have to look back a few years to Darren Phillip to consider how much defense and rebounding really mean in the voting....

Re: Stags chances for Post Season Awards -- SonofDoc, 13:00:05 01/29/03 Wed
It appears the MAAC picks it's five best players, not necessarily by position. Picking only the 5 best players, the team I would pick is:
Luis Flores
Prosper Karangwa
Courtney Fields
Nick Eppeheimer
Deng Gai
Others - Jerry Johnson, Juan Mendez, Dave Holmes, Keydren Clark, Steve Smith, Tremmell Darden, Hodari Mallory, Oscar Garcia, and Brian Dux.
However, if best player by position is picked - there could be a good debate between Gai and Fields. I hope Gai would win that debate.

All Maac -- JoeStag, 20:38:46 01/29/03 Wed
SonofDoc, I would make one change to your 1st team by adding Brian Dux in place of Courtney Fields:
1st team
=============
Brian Dux
Luis Flores
Prosper Karangwa
Nick Eppeheimer
Deng Gai
2nd team
=============
Courtney Fields
Juan Mendez
Hodari Mallory
Dave Holmes
Tremell Darden
3rd team
=============
Tyquan Goode
Steve Smith
Jared Johnson
Oscar Garcia
James Reaves
While Jerry Johnson and Keydren Clark are great talents, they do not belong on the All-MAAC Teams...... scoring is not everything.

Clark belongs...Johnson doesn't... -- GM, 15:29:14 01/30/03 Thu
...at leat not on the top 2 teams. Clark's scoring totals are way too high to keep him off the team. Plus he's averaging 3.3 apg. Defenses are being set up just to stop him. If he had some decent teammates, I think his scoring would be down a bit, but his assists and FG% would be much higher. He'll make 2nd team.
Johnson has been having a terrible year. He leads the league in turnovers and is shooting only 34% from the floor.
Goode has been having a nice year, but there is no way he is All-MAAC.
Also, as I mentioned earlier, Eppeheimer is no longer anywhere near a 1st teamer (though he got off to a great start). I'd move Mendez up in his place.

Lose Eppeheimer -- GM, 15:20:10 01/30/03 Thu
He has been fading very badly of late.
He’s averaging 5.5 ppg in his last 2 games and has shot 4 of 23 from the field. He’s now down to 16.9 ppg and is shooting only 41%. Plus, his team stinks.
He’s looking like a 3rd teamer. Dux should definitely be on the first team, IMO and probably Mendez.

My View -- GM, 15:02:38 01/30/03 Thu
Gai will almost certainly make first team.
Flores’ name has already been engraved on the POY trophy and deservedly so. Besides averaging 24 ppg, he’s averaging 5.5 rpg, 2.9 apg, 1.7 spg and shooting 47% FG, 90% FT and 42% from 3. Gai is averaging only 1 rpg more than the 6’2” Flores and 10 points less.
Garcia probably deserves 2nd or 3rd team, but I have a feeling he might end up on the “All-Overlooked” team. Nobody seems to give him much attention for his fine play. He really helped keep the Stag afloat while Gai was out.
Delfico has almost no shot at 3rd team as far as I can tell. Neither does Todd. The following 18 guys (in no particular order) are having better seasons: 1) Flores 2) Gai 3) Karangwa 4) Mendez 5) Darden 6) Fields 7) Smith 8) Dux 9) Mallory 10) Garcia 11) Clark 12) Reaves 13) Haddix 14) Holmes 15) Johnson – Manhattan 16) Eppeheimer 17) Mitchell 18) Cruz
Todd and Maxwell both have a shot at the all rookie team. Clark of SPC is the ROY, Haddix is a lock for all-rookie. Then guys like Jordan of Siena and Solliver, Burtt & McCullough of Iona, Konovelchik of Manhattan and Downey of Canisius all have similar numbers (most slightly better in fact) as Todd & Maxwell. Todd & Maxwell seem to have had quite a positive effect on FF’s record, though, so that might help them. My guess is Todd makes it, Maxwell doesn’t.
COY – right now TOT (amazingly) is looking like the leader. Gonzo also has a shot. Perhaps Lanier if Siena finishes very strong.

Re: My View -- Champ, 16:05:44 01/30/03 Thu
FF's depth will hurt them placing players on these awards. Except for possibly Gai's unique defensive skills, this is a true team where star performances get shared across many. To me, I'd prefer the balance going down the roster stats any day over a couple of street stars. It is irrelevant. Who cares as long as the other teams are in our rear-view?

True -- GM, 09:09:09 01/31/03 Fri
The only truly important post season award is the MAAC Championship Trophy.
At the same time, I think other than Gai and Garcia, there are no All-MAAC players on Fairfield (A healthy Ajou Deng certainly would have been one, though).
The Stags have a lot of solid players, who are not quite All-MAAC caliber, and it seems that a different one or two or three of them step up every night.
