Subject: Siena game Thoughts

- Too many early turnovers..... most were due to forced, bad passes inside. Don't know whay we try to force something thats not there. We had about 10 turnovers in the first 10 minutes.

- The offensive putbacks by Siena killed us in the last 7-8 minutes of the game. It was a combo of not boxing out by our guards, and our big men not holding on to the ball.

- We started with a full court press, and it was ineffective and got down 7 early, before we stopped the trapping in the backcourt. We need to put a quicker line-up out there if we are going to trap in the backcourt...... having Oscar trapping in the backcourt is not the best use of his skills.

- I thought our normal half court defense was very good and we really made them miss, they shot only 36.7% ...... BUT..... they scored off our turnovers, the O-Board putbacks, and easy baskets off the fullcourt press.

- Haddix was tough off the offensive boards, keeping the ball alive. Our hands were not good tonight.... we ere fumbling everything. We could have used more of Maxwell's good hands, but he was in serious foul trouble most of the game. He did have 6 Boards in only 17 minutes. Without him in the line-up, we lacked some need quickness for looose balls.

- I don't know why we are starting to have a love affair with a Big Line-up. In the 1st half we had Thomson and both Dengs out there, and another time it was Garcia, Thomson and a Deng. That line-up does not move well on offense, cannot get out to defend the 3, and we did not need the height to rebound. We need3ed more quickness to box out and hands to rebounded better.

- This team did show its character even in the loss..... another great comeback in the 1st half holding Siena to about 6 points the last 10 minutes of the half . And they really played tough defensively. But it was a frustrating loss as we shot better than them, and played good "D"...... just too many mistakes.

- Todd really took control the last 5 minutes of the game. Each team traded Baskets, until we missed with about 1:30 to go on a Delfico Drive. No O-board for us. Siena was getting their O-Boards that was the difference down the stretch.

-Moist Crucial Play of the Game. Stags on a roll with momentum and up one with 2:45 to go. Gai blocks a Haddix shot, the ball goes near mid court, and it looks like Siena either traveled or went backcourt, but ref awarded them a time-out with 7 seconds on the shot clock. Karangwa then made an off balance 3-pointer with the shot clock running down. He made the key shot when it counted, and he made the play against good "D" by Goode. Siena made more big plays thatn us.

The play you are talking about with about 2:45 to go was this, when Gai blocked the shot and swatted it out to half court, the ref blew the whistle and actually called it a over and back half court violation, which since Gai swatted it was not the case. It was a terrible call by the refs

Did Siena take a time out after that play? Kitts corrected his call immediately. I guess our only beef on that play would be if the stoppage allowed Siena to gather itself to get the wild shot that Karangwa hit. It wasn't like they took the opportunity to get a great shot, it just happened to go in.

I guess I don't have a problem with the situation. The ref made a mistake, he corrected it, with minor, possible damage.

Just when it looked safe to be optomistic we lose 2 of 3. What is most disturbing is we didn't protect our home turf against 2 of the better teams in the MAAC. I find it hard to understand how a team can come out flat when they have a golden opportunity to put away one of their main rivals for the top spot in the league.

The lack of rebounding in the 2nd half sounds like it was the kiss of death. That old problem no boxing out seems to have come back to haunt us. Fortunatly we have a favorable schedule down the stretch. If we beat the teams we should beat, especially at home we should finish with only 4 or 5 losses in the league.

The next few games will be the true test of how much TOT's coaching skills have improved. This team needs to refocus & play 40 minutes. 35 minutes won't be good enough against Niagara & Manhattan.

The only benefit of the last weks events is that certain inane posters have mercifully disappeared from this board. Hopefully that trend will continue even after we start winning again. We certainly don't need posters on this board who have an IQ lower than that of a Moose.

Falling behind early is a killer. No way the team should come out so flat when so much is on the line and the game is on your home court.

Needless to say, a team will rarely win when it commits 22 turnovers.

I've said it before. I'll say it again. Deng Gai is 'potentially' the most dominant player the Stags have had in 20 years. Yet he averages less than 9 shots per game (shooting 57%). He only got 6 shots last night. He needs to get the ball a lot more. I'd hate to see this guy leave after 4 years having averaged 13 points a game. He is being under-utilized.

The Stags are 12-7, but it is a very tenuous record. Too many games where they fell behind early and came back, or got a big lead and held on. This team has to develop consistency and stop going through the dramatic intra-game mood swings. That works against Loyola and St Peters, but the better teams are going to catch up with them (like last night).

Tomorrow is February 1st. We will now see how good this team really is. If they are for real, they should still get to 18 wins by the time the tourney comes around.

The Ty versus Prosper matchup didn't really materialize as big as expected, because Dewitt played Prosper for a good part of the game and Ty and Todd the rest. Ty did bother him a lot, but I think that Prosper got some baskets off rebounds over Ty. Anyone notice that the first time that Ty and Todd were in the game togther, that we were already down 14 and half way through the first half. O'Tools got to get them into the game earlier, and I hope that is not a scripted substitution.

clam jammer

it is always scripted, just like Gettysberg--once Lee committed to the charge--- his gallant men fell before the offensive rebounding of the North.

Two very obvious areas of concern taken from this game. One is that there are no adjustments made during a game and two is that this team (no M.Bell) lacks outside shooting. Our press sucked yesterday and we used it way too long. What worked 10 days ago, didn't work yesterday. Siena adjusted, we didn't.

Never left, actually...I can only infer that you were referring to me in your last post... no such luck, pal.. I am here and will continue to add my two cents whenever necessary.. even when it does not coincide with your "repeating the obvious" posts..

and as for questioning my IQ, isn't that an attack on my character? Isn't that against this board's policy? Sure seems to fit the category...

[> [> Shot Blocker / Rebounding -- Menzies, 17:58:22 01/31/03 Fri

Boxing out is disrupted by the shot blocker going to the ball. I don't know what we can do about that. It would be difficult to tell Thompson or Deng that they shouldn't try to block shots when in the game with Gai. It would be just as hard to have the player whose man is driving to go block out Gai's man from the rebound.

Does UConn have any strategy with Okafor or does a shot blocking team just have to live with it?

Good judgement by the shot blocker is key so that he doesn't go after shots he can't get.

I know you're disappointed with the loss but I feel you should be more disappointed with the attendance with a quality opponent like Siena and the bearing the outcome has on the league and tourney jostling.

We should be more disappointed with attendance then we should be with a loss? Get real.

This is Siena we're talking about. Their fans are obsessed with attendance, they think it's their link to the big time. Only Siena fans would be silly enough to suggest that attendance figures are more important than Ws and Ls.

Only ONE (1) Siena fan inconsiderate enough to post such a comment and ONE (1) Iona fan looking to "fan a spark into a flame".

The huge majority of Siena fans have enjoyed interaction with Stag supporters over the last two weeks and Fairfield has a FIRST CLASS basketball program and school.

Compare that with Iona, a gym with a post office box and an underground message board which frankly, probably only exists so you Guy, can talk to yourself while hiding from the Cal Bears and Jeff Ruland.

Why not stay on the sMAAC board where you belong?

Please, every other thread on the Siena board has to do with attendance. It's ALWAYS been that way. You guys are outright obsessed with it. Always have been.

Regarding message boards, guess who STARTED this one in the old Rivals days. Educate yourself, Gruffster.

Rebounding fundamentals - got to know how to keep your spot, use the hip, square your man, screen the ball away from an opponent! Can't do it all on hops! I hope not, but Siena's zone D might be the answer to every MAAC team trying to knock off the Stags going into the home stretch! FF had at least 3 players playing in the 4 and 5 spots that were simply outboxed, outbanged, and outhustled by not only Siena's big guys but by their 2's and 3's! What ever happened to Brad Fellicia? I'm told he's finally healthy and playing very well in practice. Seems like a very small risk to give this kid a couple real minutes at the right times, but there must be more to the story than that!
