Subject: Mamadou Diakhate

Not a lot of recruiting talk going on so here is some info on Mamadou Diakhate of St. Mary's on Long Island. He's listed as a 6'4 220 pound shooting guard by Rivals, and while they have the size right, listing him as a shooting guard is not quite accurate. While he can shoot the three, he is an inside presence and a great rebounder. The times I've seen him, I'd make him a cross between Nick Delfico and Shannon Bowman. Drives well to the basket, hits the three when he has to. Very often, the St. Mary's offense runs through him, like the FF offense ran through Bowman. A nice mix.

Does FF need him? If Logan returns for a fifth season, the remaining scholarship has to go to a big man. If Logan does not return, Diakhate is a great fit. Solid student, hard worker, great team player, real talent. Can't have too many of those.

Big schools were on him early, but backed off beacuse of lack of size for an effective inside game. Where have I heard that before????? (Shannon Bowman)

If Mamadou is of the caliber of Shannon Bowman, we need to find a way to get him. However, my experience with the recruiting "hype" is often this players don't pan out to be as advertised. In Bowmans case, the hype was there and the player exceeded all expectations.

Let me say this up front; Shannon Bowman was one of a kind. The comparison I'm making is that Diakhate is being overlooked by some big schools because they view him as an undersized low post player. A lot of this came after he had a bad time at a summer All Star camp. Last year as a jumior he was the Nassau County player of he year and averaged 22 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists on a St. Mary's team that wom the NYS B federation title. They defeated Jason Fraser's Amityville team, so the level of competition is quite good.

The reason I made the Delfico comparison is that Diakhate does play the wing. He forced an overtime last year by getting a defensive rebound and going coast to coast with a buzzer beater.

IMO, he's a great fit if Logan doesn't return. Five guards in Todd, Goode, Sogadzi, Bell and Van Schaick. Three big men in Thomson, Deng Gai and a newcomer, and Maxwell, O'Sullivan, Carter and Diakhate at 3-4.

If you want to get a look at Diakhate, go to newsday.com, go to sports, and click on the high school section. There are photos in a section about Diakhate and rundowns of every St. Mary's game.

If that doesn't work, go to google.com and type in his name.

I would love to have a player that is similar to a Shannon Bowman, and If Diakhate is that type of player we need to grab him. Normally 6-4 players can somehow be very effective forwards in the MAAC..... either at SF or PF. The key must be that Diakhate must have skills and defense not just athletic talent.

Bowman was a special player because he not only had a lot of talent, but he was also a smart player, and very good passer.
