Here is an example of what NU is up against.

Two anecdotal but telling examples...

1. A customer of mine has a daughter that plays soccer at a middling ACC team. His daughters picked this school because girls on the team get free meals, money, to promote a few local businesses in the college town. They go and eat. Post the meals and specials on their socials and get paid. He wouldn't say how much. But he said it wont make her rich. But makes it so she doesn't have to work a job in college or worry about paying for vacations. So let's assume she gets $5K. He mentioned "girls" on the team. So they are probably doing this for 4-5 girls. So one business is giving $20K to a non revenue women's team to promote their sandos around campus.

2. I had a beer at the airport in Seoul with a college professor from Ohio University. Sports came up. He said that teaching athletes at the schools now is impossible. Most do not show up. Most do not care. He said the amount of money flowing from businesses to these athletes is wild. There are several athletes on campus who make more than he does. I asked him if it was private money or businesses who were funding the NIL stuff. He said at OU mostly local businesses. Bars, fast food places. He said even local hair and nail salons are paying women athletes to promote things.

My question is...What is the % of NIL money in college sports coming from private donors (people) or businesses. From what I can tell it is mostly coming from businesses. If this is the case the deck is stacked rather largely against schools of NU's size.

Here is an example of what I am talking about...

Sam Brunelle is a decent WBB player. She started at Notre Dame then transferred to UVA.

She has her own coffee line she is paid handsomely to promote. I am sure it is part of the reason she transferred

She also has her own shirt

And she also somehow is hooked up with VA BEEF to sell steaks

My point here is that while UVA is an ACC entity and big school...Average players are making an absolute killing selling products.

Without business backing I don't see how any NIL works at any school.

I am sure there are people here who know more about how this works than I do. But NU can not even sell all the add space on their hockey dasher boards to businesses. How in the heck are they going to convince businesses to give money directly to athletes? Even if it is on a quid pro quo basis?
