The Niagara baseball team has made program history, and the Purple Eagles now prepare for the NCAA Tournament.

Niagara defeated top-seeded Fairfield, 10-6, in a back-and-forth game Saturday at Clover Stadium in Pomona to win its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament championship and earned the conference's automatic bid to the national tournament. It's the first time in program history the Purple Eagles have qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

The 64-team field will be announced at noon Monday on ESPN2, and the NCAA Tournament begins with regionals on Friday.

In the regionals, teams will be placed in one of 16 four-team regions, with teams seeded 1 through 4 in a double-elimination format at each site.

Super regionals are June 7-10, and the College World Series begins on June 14 in Omaha, Neb.

Niagara answered with a seven-run eighth inning that included two-run homers from Eric Rataczak and Matt Ward to help the Purple Eagles take a 10-6 lead.

Noah Richardson earned the win in relief for Niagara.

Rataczak, the MAAC's player of the year in baseball this season, was 3 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs. Gavin Schrader was 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs for Niagara.
