In reply to: Purp 1 's message, "Re: BTW, I am an INDEPENDENT" on Tuesday, May 28, 12:52:35am

People my age and younger (and 71) were told that:

A college degree (any degree in any field) will guarantee you a high paying job whereas ...

Someone without a college degree will be limited to low paying menial, physically laborious jobs.

It doesn't matter how much money you borrow because student loans ALWAYS pay for themselves in higher salaries when you get a job with a degree

Student loans are the best form of debt you can have because they're low interest and will pay off more than a mortgage will. '

If you can't pay them off right away, you can apply for "income based payments" that will give you a lower payment. (Not explaining clearly that you will continue to accrue interest on the unpaid balance.)

You were never told that student loan debt couldn't be discharged in bankruptcy if you were in dire straits.

What actually happened is that people took out loans that were predatory and not properly explained to them when they were young and financially immature. They then spent that money on a degree that did NOT guarantee them a high paying job out of college.

When they deferred those loans to get an even higher education (because that was the next lie), those loans continued to accrue interest.

AT this point there are a great many people who have been paying on their loans for decades and still owe more than they originally borrowed. They will never pay off those loans and they are not able to be discharged in bankruptcy or otherwise negotiated.

The have little or no credit but fuck em right? Unfortunately nobody will sell them a car, a plane ticket, a fridge, clothes for the kids. And how about the generations that follow from them?

Even though I don't always agree with you.
