I'm a little surprised, I would have thought a C grade, but I'm not shocked.

Canisius c+
I think daemen c-
Hilbert d
Dyouville c or c-

Which is surprising since they stopped their medical school building. Anyone know what happened?

They were unable to attract their most valuable asset, Dr Green.

Interestingly enough
US NEWS AND WORLD REPORT also ranked them as the best.

These polls are all sketchy. You never know who to trust. I do know that to promote you are on the US NEWS REPORT you have to pay $10K to say that you are. So if you have to have to pay $10K that might not be the most bias.

It is all about value tho.

At the price of a SUNY school NU is probably an A+
At the price of $30K its probably a B-
At the price of $50K it is probably a C-

The more expensive these schools get the less valuable they are to the consumer.

About 30% of the students are education majors, takes about 10 years for the loan to be paid off plus teachers in NY don't make real money for about 15 years unless they coach three sports.

RCM is correct, the higher the price tag, the less value Niagara has. NU, DYC, Daemen, Hilbert, Villa all can't survive in this area. Medaille found out the hard way.

There is absolutely no chance any of the 40 something’s now are going to saddle their kids with student loan debt. So many of us learned it is absolutely, positively, not worth it. It is a major major problem for all smaller schools.

The large deficit, lay offs, department downsizing etc, is a concern. What is more of a concern is the numbers are actually up this year. This likely points to a much lower yield per student. Admission numbers do not mean anything. The most important number is what each student is actually paying.

NU on its own merit is a great school. NU at 50K is not. FWIW, you can say the same exact thing about the 9 or so small private schools within a 2 hour radius of Buffalo.

At current state NU will cost $72,000 by 2034. John Carroll, Mercyhurst, CC, will as well. That is totally untenable considering the demographics of less children being born and reluctance of this generation’s parents to take on student debt.

The only real alternative for all these schools whom don’t have massive endowments is downsizing. There is a terminus to the price elasticity of higher ed. And I think everyone is just about there.

Cmon folks nobody pays $50,000 to attend Niagara. 99% of the students get some type of scholarship. The last time I checked the average net tuition was below $23,000. That is ridiculously low for most colleges in the Northeast.
If NU can't sell that in WNY, they need to start recruiting students again from the NYC ,Conn. and Philly areas.

NU MSRP is $52,490
With a 90% acceptance rate
If the average pay rate is $23,000 then that is a major major major problem for the school. A yield of sub 50% is not sustainable for any private school.

FYI - St. Bonas had (yet another) big freshmen class, but their tuition discount rate is 60%. That's way too high and not sustainable over the long haul.

Would you choose to attend Olean only to move away after graduation, with most people only knowing your school from MBB? Today’s kids are more informed than my generation—they’re asking questions, crunching numbers, and realizing that a town of 2,000 with no job prospects isn’t appealing. They’d prefer online options or life in a big city. I don’t think students see the value in schools like Olean, Cortland, Geneseo, Oswego, or Plattsburgh unless they’re from those areas. There is a lot of SUNY schools in the middle of nowhere ie Oneonta or Morrisville - what do you do when you're a senior? Niagara stands out as a well-known institution, but it’s up to NU to find its unique niche. Where do you do internships? Does Olean even have a bank or large corp anymore? NU has the advantage

Great post larry

Not sure if anyone has been on campus lately but the amount of different ethnic groups is rather incredible. Kudos to NU for this. It is great to see. But with this likely came steep discounts to attract these students. The make up walking around looks like it should at a University. Very diverse.

Always be skeptical when any school releases freshman class data. All that matters is yield. What students pay out of pocket.

Another area of concern for NU is the number of PELL students whom attend. Great for opportunity. Awful for yield.

Again this isn’t an NU problem. It’s a private university problem. The model is not sustainable. There will be major changes in higher ed with in a decade.

A total reset. Similar to what happened after ww2 which was the last time higher ed saw a major shake up.

The discount rate is 51.9 % up from 50.8% the year before accordingly to the internet.

So more students good
More diverse student body great
Going wrong direction on yield = unsustainable
