This isn't a hockey town—it's a Sabres town. Youth hockey participation has dropped significantly. Just look at how much more ice time is available at Dwyer compared to five years ago. The Jr. Purple Eagles had 20 teams back then; now, they have just 15.

Even worse, the roller rink in West Seneca, which was the most affordable way for kids to get into the sport, has been turned into a basketball court.

I've heard more bullshit about this hockey program I can't even read the other board anymore. This whole concept came from Seymore Knox to Fr. O'Connell. Why didn't Seymore build the GD thing to begin with?

Basketball is still sitting 1200 per game. How many is hockey sitting per game?

Last I heard NU still had a hockey program. Why don't some of these talky bullshitters buy season tickets, contribute to the program and attend them? I know many, many people who live hockey in this town, They still play in Senior leagues. Their kids played locally as well. Do they attend NU games? Nope, they don't.

I'm fed up to my eyeballs about this hockey crap. You have a half finished arena that is uncomfortable to sit in. Give me a friggin break.

That’s funny. Western New York is among the NHL’s top playoff markets for TV viewership despite their hometown team not making the playoffs for the last 13 years. Your stat about Dwyer arena having ice available is wrong. It’s consistently used from morning until 11pm. Comparing Dwyer ice time and a West Seneca roller rink shows just how stupid you are. And Basketball is absolutely not sitting 1200 per game, that is just not true. And your comment about contributing to the program, people do by way of donations, sponsorships. Niagara Hockey sells more season tickets and has more donors than the Basketball program does. More alumni give back to the program, more parents give back to the program, more families enjoy the games together. They sell more food and beverage at Dwyer where it’s almost non-existent for Basketball.

This hockey crap has been to the NCAA tournament 4 times and is the best team in the AHA today. They have the best GPA out of 19 sports and do more in the community than any other team. This hockey crap doesn’t need summer classes to keep kids eligible and they actually give their time and money back.
You guys have such an antiquated view on what’s actually going on on campus and no matter how many facts and figures are presented, you just can’t get Father Basketball out of your head. Have fun in the transfer portal in March. I’ll be with the hockey team on the way to the conference championship.

I didn't say any of that. I think you were responding to "wcPurple". You have to put the response under the guys name, not the last post.

I was just saying that I have sat in that place several times and it's not comfortable. It's on the cold side. I see people wearing winter coats watching a hockey game, and it's on one side. I mean it nice looking for what it is, but that's all it is. Also, you need every bit of revenue you can squeeze out of it be it rentals, tickets, donations, whatever. The equipment is extremely costly, and the whole enchilada is costly, and they never needed it to begin with. Having to start the program TODAY with what you have, would you start it?

That was my two cents.

On the one hand, I've got some guy who has been on this forum for 10 minutes and thinks he's King Shit of Turd Island AND on the other, I have my besty who knows more about NU athletics than just about anyone else.

Now Mr. ForeverPurps86, if you want to sit in the hockey stands with the other 15 people who are jerking off to the movement of the puck that's your business. But I'll tell you this, I'd rather be in the GC watching NU basketball than watching Div. 10 hockey. As to which sport is bringing in the most revenue and is the least expensive at this time is hardly necessary to argue about. Both are NOT world beaters, however, Niagara basketball is, and will always be the leading sport at the University. Also remember, NCAA Div. 1 hockey only has about one third the number of schools than college basketball; and when NU was going to the NCAA hockey nationals, there were many fewer programs than today. In the beginning, NU had a lot of enthusiasm , but NO REAL plans for success ; and today, it is what it is ! A low collegiate level hockey program that is closer to a D-2 championship than it is to a Frozen 4 winner.

Now shuta you face !

Rather be in Gallagher Center watching Houghton and LIU? Wow! I get it though, I’m sure watching ‘Bona come in last year and beating us by 34 was a real treat for you. And MAAC Basketball!? At least Fairfield and Quinnipiac have their shit together and actually invest in athletics, but watching NU and the rest of the poverty stricken schools compete in the MAAC is certainly, “mission driven”, so I get your adoration. You are far from sane in calling the AHA Divison 10 when we play basketball in a high school gymnasium.

And why is Niagara Basketball the leading sport? What evidence do you have to suggest that it should be? What’s the plan for BB success? Pay your coach a fortune, rebuild a roster every year? Then what? You’re not getting a new gym or facility, so what’s the plan? Pray? How can you possibly sit there and say Basketball is any further from Division II than Hockey? If they actually got the investment from the University, Hockey would be much further along.

You and your friend can quote your Frank Layden history and your stories of Calvin Murphy all you want, but Niagara Basketball is only as alive as the old Italian men and priests who drag themselves into the games and can’t find it in themselves to talk about anything less than Frank, Hubie, or Joe. Try getting outside of Niagara Falls some time. There’s a whole world out there. Maybe even take a drive out to Olean and take some notes.

Well the guy talks like it just needs a few things like it's a startup, but the team has been in existence and it's brand new state of the art Dwyer Arena joins it at closing in on 30 years. The program has had almost three decades to attract a fan base and establish itself and in truth it has, but not to the fans locally....and say what you want about basketball there are probably 4X the attendance than for hockey and part of that is playing local schools who also want to experience playing a Division I program. There's no law against it.

Well you said "build it and they will come", so they built it and waited 28 years and nobody is coming and that building has it's own business plan unlike the GC and their season ticket base is measly so they have to depend on rentals and donations from people like yourself who give nothing but squawk plenty. Nobody here cares about college hockey. They care about the Sabres and their kids travel teams. Just because you don't care for the school's basketball program, don't besmirch those who enjoy and remember it fondly.

We're just trying to point out that neither Supe or myself can personally do anything about the fortunes of either hockey or basketball. As much as you can think blowing off hot air will force somebody on this board to honor your wish/dream or whatever you want is foolhardy at best. The hockey program is not new at the school. It's been almost 30 years. Whether you like it or not, for as bad a program you say basketball is, it still outdraws hockey by a lot. There is nothing you can point to that proves college hockey is a proven commodity either at the gate or in the accounts receivable. The general fund didn't erect the Dwyer Arena. It was a personal donation from the Robert Dwyer Family. The Gallagher Center was I believe a public project built around 1949.

No major conference will accept NU into it's fold, and that goes for both sports, guaranteeing that both schools will play similar teams that don't command much national attention.

Now you can bitch that a variety of reasons are to blame but today's reality is what you are dealing with. As it stands today, college hockey attracts mainly one race who come from fairly well off families who maintain that by creating traveling leagues where better athletes cannot afford to contend with. And then there is the cost of the equipment itself. So the best athletes don't play college hockey because if hockey was available to all, it wouldn't be dominated by one race because those kids would be on the bench and could not sustain traveling schedules where they would travel with Mom and Dad and then sit the bench. The best athletes are shut out from college hockey and see how much diversity sits in the NHL Hall of Fame.

Quinnipiac did it right. That school was enthusiastic and motivated like Niagara, BUT had a REAL plan unlike Niagara who just hoped that it could get into a major conference. Quinny went into it with the money to build a D-1 hockey arena. It went for the whole pizza NOT half a one. That university had REAL SUPPORT and BACKING. It went into it with both eyes open not by a wing and a prayer. When you do things half-assed, you usually fail or fall short of your objectives and goals. Niagara has indeed fallen short of being the hockey power that it wanted to be. Yes, at the time NU wanted to have hockey as its' #1 sport. Well as of this date in time, basketball is still the #1 enchilada at the University and in the community.

I rest my six pack (case) !

Arguing that Hockey is Division 10 and trying to flex saying NU basketball is good is literally like two small people arguing whom is taller.

Both programs are literally among the lowest and worse in their respective sports.

Both teams leave a lot to desired
Both teams draw very bad
Both teams play in very outdated facilitis
Both teams will never ever be good

This is patently false
They have just built 3 new hockey rinks in WNY. The program at NU is shrinking because people are choosing to have their kids play elsewhere.

YOU stated that you have no interest in Niagara basketball, that you "couldn't care less." Even when it comes to hockey , you don't seem that overly interested. In fact, most of the interest in that sport seems to come from Maldez and myself with some comments coming from you and some others. So although you do comment some on Niagara hockey, you don't seem to be an overly enthusiastic supporter of the program. So again, why do you post ? Is it to be a shit disturber ?

Well, I at least go to NU hockey games. I haven't been to a bball game in 20 years. Basketball is not something that is discussed or even thought of in my house. The kids like hockey so I go.

There is literally zero incentive for an average fan to even TRY and learn about players in mid major sports. Especially a team that literally starts over each year.

I suspect when the NU hockey team is good again I will care. I couldnt make 10 players on the Buffalo Sabres either. When they are good I will care again and get to know the players.

Maybe what is at play here is more of a generational divide. A divide that is being seen in music, sports, media, etc. Younger folks are not as die hard about anything. When it is interesting they will care. When it is not there are literally a million other things to consume one's time.

Niagara Basketball back in the day was an event. Good teams, good crowds. And if you wanted to see good D1 sports you went to an NU basketball game.

The cold hard calculus now is "well I could go there to watch, I could park, I could walk to the game, I could sit in a half filled field house" or...I could just stay home and watch any basketball or football team I want in my house. On a 70" TV, with surround sound, while placing some bets, drinking some beer, and having ten steps to use the mens room.

The things that are important to the older generation of fans is not important to younger fans. Hell its not even important to the students who attend the school.

I am not saying the "older" way is bad or invalid. I am saying you have to make people care. The average age of folks at hockey games at NU is probably 35 years younger than a basketball game. Basketball is not big in WNY anymore. Hockey remains big.

If that makes me a fair weather fan so be it. But NU hockey for a young family in Lewiston is the best entertainment money out there. Hands down.

I agree with RCM. but that hockey program isn't brand new. Twenty eight years and counting..

and....AHEM!

The M&T Bank Arena at Quinnipiac University cost $52 million to build. The 185,000-square-foot facility opened in January 2007 as part of a $360 million project to develop the York Hill campus. The arena houses a 3,400-seat hockey rink, a 3,600-seat basketball court, locker rooms, a weight training facility, and other amenities.

Will you ever realize in all the times you've wasted on this board that NU is a relatively small Catholic school. Lower Division I a correct ranking. Attended by mostly woman.

Niagara University has a total undergraduate enrollment of 2,747 (fall 2023), with a gender distribution of 33.9% male students and 66.1% female students.

Can we get out of elementary school for most of this discussion long enough to realize that having hockey doesn't do jack didly squat for enrollment. If it did and the ratio went to say 70/30, it would be at the top of my list for schools to apply to.

Well like the guy says. There are 3000 teams in WNY. There are also 500 Club teams involving 10,000 students. There is a Division I hockey on campus as well.

So, why is the hockey team not better supported? Here's the most whined about reasons:

1) Not a good facility in aesthetics.
2) Not in a good enough, strong enough or highly ranked conference.
3) I can watch hockey on TV and play it, if I can still walk.
4) Simply put, lack of interest.

Best answer listed: Simply put, lack of interest.
