In reply to: NUSuperfan 's message, "Niagara at Kent State Thursday 7:00...ESPN+" on Wednesday, November 20, 04:42:05pm

The Golden Flashes will play host to the Niagara Purple Eagles this Thursday. Tip off from the MAC Center is scheduled for 7:00PM.

Niagara is currently 1-2 on the season and will stop at the Stroh Center to take on BG this Tuesday before the visiting the Flashes. I imagine that Niagara will remain in Ohio after Tuesday's game.

Anyways, as it stands they have a win over Houghton (the textbook school) to go along with losses to Michigan State (94-60) and Detroit (84-78).

Nine Purple Eagles have seen regular minutes through the first three games including 6'5 senior wing Olumide Adelodun. The Calgary product is averaging 16 points and 4 rebounds per night. He spent last season at Winona State and was at Ohio University in Athens before that. Another Guard from north of the border, 6'1 sophomore Jahari Williamson is pitching in 11 points per night and is currently shooting 50% from beyond the arc. Like Adelodun, Williamson is a transfer who found Niagara by way of Valpo. After that, the scoring seems to be spread out.

It appears that Niagara plays with 3 or even 4 guards. From what I can tell the starters are 6'1, 6'3, 6'5, 6'6 and 6'11. This is not uncommon for mid majors, but hopefully KSU can find some room to operate around the hoop.

As for the Flashes, 9 players are currently averaging 14 minutes or more through three games. Another 3 have logged 10 per game. Obviously this includes the game against Miami's space station campus, but it is the sample size we have.

A few interesting stats through three...

Jalen Sullinger leads the team in assists with 10. If that continues, that is a good thing for Kent State. Again, I understand that the sample size is small. But, if your best three point shooter also leads the team in assists...your offense is in halfway decent shape.

The KSU starting five is shooting 82.6% from the free throw line.

Hornbeak is shooting the ball at a 66% clip but also leads the team in furnovers. For my early season money, these are two of the most important stats out there. He is a senior big man. The Flashes need him to score point and rebound the ball...which he is doing for the most part.
But just like none of us want Cli'Ron getting in early foul trouble, nobody wants to see him loose the basketball when it enters the post. Turnovers by frontcourt players have always been a gauge of how good a MAC team can be. At least how "MAC good" they can be.

Finally, and this one is more of a question for the crowd...what do you think of KSU's backcourt depth? It seems to me that Medley and Sullinger are in. Safford and Barnett have gotten the early cracks in the starting five. Any feedback from those of you who have seen them (I just listen to Rob P.)?

All that said (and asked) This is the first of two big games for the Flashes this week.

GO FLASHES!

Your team played their hearts out at the end of that game and came very close to coming all the way back after being well behind. Sometimes a close loss pays dividends down the road. Those 3s at the end were impressive! Unfortunately, KSU matched them with several trips to the free throw line.

Thanks, Larry, a loss is still a loss but that was a valiant and very impressive come-back bid...I think the Purps will do well in the MAAC.

It’s gonna be a rough season for us and for your Griffs. It’s no longer the same for either of us with the NIL and portal. Complete overhauls every season doesn’t bode well for success. I wouldn’t want to be a head coach at schools like NU and CU.
