Why wasn't this considered a regular game? This and one RPI game were considered "exhibition games". Why?

12/30/24 Purple Eagles beat Guelph University in an exhibition at Dwyer

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y.—
Lars Rodne and Shane Ott each recorded a goal and an assist as Niagara defeated Canadian university Guelph 5-2 in an exhibition game Monday at Dwyer Arena.

How it Happened
The Purple Eagles (8-8-3) dominated early, scoring three times in the first period. Rodne opened the scoring at 10:25, followed by Ott at 14:51 and Trevor Hoskin just eight seconds later to build a 3-0 lead.

Kyler Kleven extended Niagara's advantage to 4-0 early in the second period before Guelph got on the board with Nolan Dann's short-handed goal at 17:42. Grayson Dietrich restored the four-goal cushion for Niagara late in the second period.

The Gryphons added a power-play goal from Tristan De Jong in the third but couldn't overcome the early deficit.

Pierce Charleson and Mitchell Day split time in goal for Niagara, combining for 23 saves. The Purple Eagles outshot Guelph 33-25 while winning 39 of 60 faceoffs.

Up Next
Niagara will host Bentley for a two-game series beginning on Friday, Jan. 3 at 7 p.m. at Dwyer Arena.

They are only exhibition games. Michigan State plays programs like the University of Toronto every season. Those programs are NOT NCAA schools.

OK, but earlier in the year NU played two games against RPI and one counted as a regular game the other an exhibition.

Just wondering why?

Mike, there must have been an agreement between the 2 schools and sanctioned by the NCAA, that only one game was to be counted and the other an exhibition game. That's the only answer I have for you.

Denver lost 7-6 to a club team over the weekend. Maybe the greatest upset in ALL of hockey

If I had to guess the Pioneers players all got drunk night before. Their head coach was at world juniors.
