In reply to: Maldez 's message, "Re: NU 7-12 2-6 In The MAAC)" on Friday, January 24, 12:37:51pm

It doesn't matter whether or not they are fired. There is no accountability at Niagara and that's the point. There is no emphasis on winning or excellence at Niagara. It's all play along to get along. Contrast that with St. Bona, which is a smaller school than Niagara but has all the ingredients the Niagara lacks. Bona is a success and NU is what it is, and most probably always will be.

Bona has a winning track record over the last several years because die-hard fans got together and raised enough cash to pay a top-tier coach, Mark Schmidt...their winning has nothing to do with the administration holding its coaches accountable.

They paid some of the money for a coach. It certainly was NOT all of it. What is the percentage that they paid ?

Now beyond that, Bona was in the A-10, which , if I'm not mistaken was before Schmidt was hired.

Bona's success goes way back to the late 50s and 1960. Have the fans always "paid" for the coach ? I don't think so. Yes, Bona also had some lean years, which is expected of most D-1 programs over the course of decades, but nothing like Niagara's.

Bona has been to way more NCAA and NIT tournaments than Niagara. Bona, I believe has won 2 NIT championships. Arguably, if Lanier had not been put out of commission by an injury just before the NCAA finals, many people believe that the "Brown Indians" had enough talent to beat UCLA for the 1970 National Championship. Bona was once ranked #2 in the nation, and over the years has been consistently nationally ranked.

This is a school that , as I stated earlier, is smaller than Niagara, located in the wilderness, near no large or mid-sized city; and even more remarkably , near no major or mid-sized airport.

So in my opinion, your excuse doesn't compute !

Because if you don't have the other ingredients necessary for success, you won't win !!!!!

Do you think Schmidt could be successful at Niagara ? Hell no ! Even if the alum, students , fans and surrounding community chipped in for his salary, Schmidt couldn't win at Niagara; and that's with a large city and mid-sized city, one major airport and the one located in NF. But you know what Tom, Bona would still be the main power in WNY.

But we shouldn't feel too bad because Niagara, Canisius and the so called giant in WNY, UB are in the same boat. Why is UB included ? Because UB is too inconsistent from coach to coach and commitment to commitment; in addition, the MAC is not a powerhouse conference AND not nearly as respected as the A-10, which Bona is in and has prospered.
