In reply to: basketballfan 's message, "Why support a team that is completely different each year?" on Sunday, January 26, 06:01:18pm

Anyone who saw Gallagher coach is likely now either being driven to games, deceased, or living in a warmer climate. Off-campus areas aren't safe at night for those who have mobility issues. Furthermore, the impact of Covid has significantly reduced the number of casual fans.

The fan base in their 70s is gradually diminishing for the same reasons each year. It's been 20 years since we last made it to the tournament, and we're in a subpar conference, which doesn't help. Those of us who remember the Frank Layden era are starting to retire and move to warmer places. My connection to the hockey program is weak; that's more for the younger crowd. Fans in their 40s and 50s from the Armstrong era have probably lost interest by now.

It's tough to admit, but who can drive to campus for a 6:30 p.m. midweek game if they're not retired? And if you are retired, chances are your night vision isn't what it used to be. What's the demographic coming to the game or target audience?

Yes, good points, and here's another one. The younger fans ,locally, don't give a shit about Niagara basketball. They'd rather stay home and watch games that mean something. The kids today will be wearing UConn or Duke hoodies, etc.. They have no interest whatsoever in going to the GC to cheer on low major hoops featuring Niagara, Sacred Heart, Merrimack ad nauseam. I'd go because NU basketball means something to me, but for today's younger set, it means jack shit.
Heck, you can't even get local talent to stay and attend NU. If NU could at least attract one or two WNY talents to play there, perhaps that would attract the younger community in general to attend Niagara hoops games. BUT THAT AINT HAPPENENIN'.
