In reply to: basketballfan 's message, "Does coaching matter?" on Sunday, February 23, 04:37:50pm

First of all, we're talking about St. John's here and the conference that they are in. The name Rick Pitino attracts great players wherever he has coached. Iona,( which along with, until the last few years, Siena ) has always been a contender , especially, since LaSalle left the MAAC.

If Coach Tom Izzo left MSU to coach Niagara, don't you think that some of the better 3 and 4 star talent would jump at the chance to play for him ? Yes, certainly, and probably a few 5 star players ,as well.

If Pitino left SJU after this season, the Johnnies would be back to square one, unless they acquired another BIG NAME coach to take his place.

So are we talking about pure coaching here, or is it the NAME that brought back success to SJU ?

Both factors

Casey actually recruited well. Just couldn't coach or retain players (before transfer was easy)

Chris Mullen was a big name who coached poorly.

Kids will gravitate to a coaching legend, not so much to an unknown coach with just a basketball player's name.
