Niagara University remains a Division I institution. While there has been discussion and speculation among fans and in online forums about the financial challenges facing smaller D-I programs (especially in light of other universities like Saint Francis University reclassifying to D-III), Niagara's athletic department has reaffirmed its commitment to the D-I level.

The university has even entered into an agreement to co-host the 2026 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament first and second rounds, a Division I championship event, in Buffalo, NY.
