Subject: Further thoughts on national defense
In reply to: jack 's message, "Re: Free-Market Anarchism" on 15:52:27 01/31/00 Mon

An enemy wouldn't need to occupy each and every household; they could just bomb our power stations. We'd still be free; free to hunt rabbits, drink river water, and cuddle up with the family next to the campfire. Those wussies in the cities would probably die by the tens-of-thousands if their local grocery stores closed. Personally, I'd rather live the life of a nineteenth-century pioneer than a twentyfirst-century "comerade", but I fear the majority of the population is soft and weak, and would submit to any sort of rule rather than lose their comfy lifestyle.

I just don't think we could get by without national defense. We'd be far too tempting a target. And who needs to invade the country all at once? How about just taking over the south end of Florida or Texas and slowly marching northward? Poison gas can clear fairly large stretches of real estate and leave it habitable shortly afterwards.

Sorry, I don't have much to do tonight and I'm just postin' up a storm ;)

Jack
