Take a trip over to the UMass basketball board. If you'll notice, they are very conscientous about listing the sources of their articles, and attributing whatever they cut and paste to that source. And if they do cut and paste something from a recruiting website, it's never more than a brief snippet. A few years back, people on that board were cutting and pasting entire articles from sites like these, and I believe Rivals in particular. That stopped pretty quickly. You know why? Someone from one of these websites likely contacted the moderator over there and informed him that what was happening on his board was copyright infringement, and against the law.
It's the same deal on any other message board where this type of thing goes on. Regardless of how prevalent it is, it's against copyright law. Those sites could get sued over those types of things, and justifiably. You can't take a passage from a published report and claim it as your own. You just can't do it. That's copyright infringment. The New York Times? It doesn't matter where it's happening. If you do this type of thing, you're subject to legal action.
If you can prove to me that Rambacker confirmed some of this information with his own sources, I would welcome that. I don't have a problem with every one of his recruiting posts. Those I did take issue with are the ones that appeared literally hours after a published report appeared on a website, with the same exact, information, down to a kid's GPA and SAT scores..did his "sources" give him that information? Come on now. A blind man can see that some of these instances were BLATANT instances of copyright infringement.
There is more to this story (and more reasons why I am so adamantly against this type of behavior), and I'd be happy to speak with you about it if you'd like. Jo Dete has my contact info.
Beyond that, all I can say is the fact that this type of thing is prevalent on message boards like these does not change the fact that it is prosecutable by law. I suggest you check up on that sort of thing. You'll see why I was so annoyed by some of Rambacker's actions (and why somebody could have taken legal action against him as a result).
