different reasons, really. THAT is answered in how they dress.

the outfit that i wear, like theirs with short sleeves. if i were a guardian, this would symbolize that i would not want to be seen for fear of safety to the person i was protecting.

theirs, the outfits with no sleeves, means that they do not want to be seen because they fear what other peoples knowledge of them will cause- be it to you, or themselves. these are the most common. ones in long dresses like Vincent's are afraid to be seen because they have personally whitnessed something horrible, and are worried that being seen will cause the events to repeat themselves. i think in the case of the one that is here, she is worried that Vincent's loved one will die- and she is carrying that soul, so she leaves sight to keep it safe.
