I've got a problem with my apple snails, well some of them anyway. The shells have holes in them, the snail is still alive and 'happy' but the holes are not pretty to look at. Any ideas

Steve, it might be some sort of calcium deficiency. Is there any plant matter that is known to be high in calcium that you could add to their diet to improve things.
Failing that, have you thought about using car body filler to bung up those holes.

Well, you never know but I would not advise the use of bottled water in the aquarium.
Just out of interest, what is the water chemistry of your tank with this problem, it maybe to soft and acid and therefore disolving the shells.

Time for a clear out!

PS I'm in London all day tomorrow just a mile or so from Wholesale Trops so I'll see you at Northdrift way at 19:00 to go back again.

Can I add to this message before it's sent?

Moved my snails into a different tank with less salt -
( goldfish ). Had them with the cichlids in the brackish water adn they seemed fine, but the cichlids were killing them. Now, their shells are growing and they're very deformed - flaking, staggered, rough, uneven. They don't look as healthy now and they're sluggish. Any suggestions for healthy diet and shell repair? Mucho appreciado!

Steve,if I remember right you run your tanks on rainwater.I have no such problem with tapwater so calcium might be the problem. After all, what are the shells made from?!!!

All snails shells will disolve in soft acid waters over time, the best thing to do is transfer them to a neutral water and feed them on flake food which apple snails will even take of the water surface, freeze dried brine shrimp are also much appre. as they contain the shell of the shrimp (adults)within a few weeks you will find all the holes are gone but scaring will remain. best thing to do if you want perfect shells is to set the damaged ones up in a 12"-15" tank with a floating platform in and breed some young ones.

Thanks for the tips, moving some of the adults into normal tap water (hard) has resulted in another batch of eggs, lets see what happens.
