Back in the kitchen, Harry and Sue became aware of a sudden drop in temperature, at the same time the buzzer sounded on the gauss meter. A noise drew their attention to the area where the saucepan shelves were situated. They immediately became aware that a large brass handled frying pan that was hanging on the edge of one of the saucepan shelves was swinging gently from side to side. There was no obvious cause for this to have happened and after some three minutes it stopped dead. Harry entered the time and nature of the incident in his notebook noting also the temperature and magnetic field readings before, during, and after the event. They decided to have a closer inspection of the shelving but before moving, said aloud "we're now about to move over to the saucepan shelves", this was so that the recorded movement would be attributed to them and not lead to confusion for anyone later on playback of the tape.
