Family Drops Lawsuit Against 'Springer'
Sat, Jan 4, 2003 11:40 AM PDT

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - The family of a woman who was murdered after appearing on "The Jerry Springer Show" has dropped a lawsuit against the show.

A ruling in a similar case involving "The Jenny Jones Show" led to the decision, Paul Vlachos, the attorney for the family of Nancy Campbell, tells the AP.

In that case, an appeals court in Michigan threw out a $29 million judgment against "Jenny Jones" won by relatives of Scott Amedure, who was killed by Jonathan Schmitz in 1995 after revealing a crush on Schmitz. The court ruled the show had no legal duty to protect a guest after the program was taped.

The Springer case had similar circumstances. Campbell was murdered a few hours after an episode about love triangles featuring her and her ex-husband, Ralf Panitz, aired in 2000. Panitz was convicted of the murder in May 2002 and given a life sentence.

In the suit, Campbell's son, Jeffrey, alleged that the show intentionally cultivated bad feelings between Nancy Campbell and Panitz and created "a mood that led to murder."

As part of the agreement to drop the suit, attorneys for "The Jerry Springer Show" promise not to countersue the family for malicious prosecution.
