Subject: An old worker looks up.
In reply to: Aphrodite 's message, "~*~Interest~*~" on 06:14:54 05/20/01 Sun

He squints up, a grin adding more wrinkles to his already crinkled face and revealing very few teeth. "Yes, miss, these are the finest horses you can ever find within these deserts," he boasts, then moves toward them. "Yes, a look, you say?" Deftly he unties one of the horses, a chestnut with a star and snip, and leads him away from the others.

"This here is Juhuma, an Arabian gelding. He's about-" he pauses and scratches his head "-8 or 9 years old, slightly jumpy, but one of the best you could have. His grandsire wandered into the tribe as a foal, so we are guessing that he's was the first in captivity. He was mothered by the leader's prize mare." He walks and trots the horse for Aphrodite to see Juhuma's gaits, then puts him back and unties the next horse.

"Lanimie here is a Barb mare, about 12 years old. She's the quietest you could ever get - except perhaps for your horse, miss - (nods to Shanai) and can be guided by hand, voice, and leg. We don't know much about her, one of the lesser members of our tribe asked us to sell her, so all I can give you is that her family has been in captivity for generations." Again he shows Lanimie's gates, then exchanges her for the next horse.

"This is Matayra, Arabian mare." A grin spreads across his face again, making some wonder if he had gotten in a fight to have so little teeth left. He rubs the mare's belly. "She's in foal, see how round she is? Due in about 2 months, so we been taking it slow, for her benifit. She's a runaway from another tribe, she came to us with scraps of leather on her head - skin and bones she was, with men chasing her with long whips - poor thing." Shakes his head sadly and pats Matayra's neck. "But now that we've shown her a gentle hand and kind voice, she's almost as quiet as Laramie." He brings out the next horse.

"Denaro is one of the calmest stallions you could ever find, he only gets excited when he's alone when mares are in heat, and then only a little - natural instincts. If you take him, though, you may want to put extra locks on his door - escape artists that's what he is. His sire was captured in a roundup by another tribe, then sold to us. He's a half-brother to Juhuma, they have the same sire. Denaro is an Arab." He brings out the last horse, keeping a tight grip on the lead.

"This is Pampenue, the high-strung Turk." He pauses to pull the horse down from a half-rear. "He's an absolute contrast to Denaro, who's calm. Pampenue is one of the wildest stallions you could find. He was caught in one of our traps, set for the enemies. He got really hurt, and we had to keep him with us while he was nursed. When we tried to let him go, we found him a week later, skin and bones - he'd forgotten how to survive. So we had to take him." He shakes his head, then pats the horse as he dances across the ground, almost colliding with a camel. Quickly he puts him back.

The old man grins again. "Well, those are the only ones we have right now. Is there one you were interested in?"
