It was late in the afternoon. The sun had began to set on the vast metropolis that was home to the Maverick Hunter's headquarters. The city lights were starting to come on, and many were starting to leave work. Some headed to their homes. Others, went to the entertainment sections of the city looking for a good time. Among all this, there was one who was conteplating the multiple destinations of the masses. Signas stood on the balcony where he had been many times before. (It was here that he had met IO.) He often liked the solitary feel of this perch. He liked to watch the people. He needed to see them to remind him of who he was trying to protect.
An aid came out to meet him, reluctantly walking forward. Upon hearing the footfalls of the rookie Hunter, Signas turned in anticipation. "Yes Domino, what is it?"
"Signas, our report is complete.", She replied. She being a small Reploid with white armor. There were a few places where her armor displayed black trim. The crystals on her body were red, and a long tail of blonde hair had hung down her back.
"Okay Domino. I want a full staff, and assembly meeting arranged. Have everyone in the Auditorium in 15 minutes."
She acknowledged, and left the balcony in a hurry.
It had been like this now for weeks. He would send teams out to investigate, and they would give him information. He would extract the informtaion, and whatever was of the greatest importance....that was what he would tell his Hunters. This Doppler business had only begun. And what of the unknown army that had begun an assault on him? He hated variables. He hated not knowing. He hated the kinds of surprises that went along with it all. Surprises cost him good men. They could cost him lives, and he didn't want that to happen....not to Human or Reploid.
The time came for him to address the Hunters. They had all gathered together. Among the Elite were X, and Zero. Standing next to Mega Man X was IO, X's new student. Joining them had been Douglas, Life Saver, and much to his surprise, Alia. She had returned from her stay with her former colleague Gate. She seemed sad after her visit. Signas meant to ask her what it about, but chose not to pry. He got everyone's attention, and as he did, a large screen behind him began it's presentation.
"Welcome home Hunters. I know it was not easy bringing all of you here! But, I am relieved to say that we were able to bring you all home without any losses. Some of you were on official bussiness, but all of that has been postponed for now. Recently, as all of you are aware, we witnessed an attack on Dr. Doppler's new island city. In part, our sensors were inaccurate at pinpointing the location of the attack. We also see that whatever caused us to be wrong, also affected Doppler's sensors too. These images seen on the display screen catalogue the effectiveness with which Doppler can stage a counter attack. The origin of the attack was thought to be at this island, shown here. The initial attack destroyed a good portion of Doppler's city above ground. However, his island had sustained almost no damage in the subterranian sectors. The target island on the other side though has been completely destroyed. The counter attack has made any though of repopulation on the target island unthinkable for the next 63 years. The level of radiation is dangerously high, and our search teams have gathered as much information as they can."
Signas paused for a moment.
"These events beg the question, what is to be done? Well, We now know that the source of these events has been triggered from our own moon! These satellite images display a military installation which has been fortified at the location shown here. Now, while there is no evidence to suggest military involvment of the surrounding colonies, this is also not being ruled out. Our current theories speculate that a fanatical uprising has taken place on the moon. An advanced military has been organized, and has prepared a strike on Dr. Doppler. Now, while Doppler is not our ally he SHOULD be considered. Ladies, and gentlemen.....we have two threats.
One of them is from the moon, the other is from Dr. Doppler.
That is why this has been a difficult decision for me to make. I'm dividing the Hunters into three factions.
The first strike team has the hardest job. They must travel to the moon, and investigate the potential threat to Earth's safety. At present, we cannot say if Maverick involvement has played any role in this attack. But, your objectives are clear. Find, and neutrallize the enemy in Space. You will transit to our headquarters on the Eurasia space colony. From there you will receive further instructions."
Signas paused again, to let the word sink in.
"The second team's job is no less important. They must infiltrate Dr Doppler's fortress and determine what his
objectives are. They will also be instructed to neutrallize any threats which are discovered. Doppler's a shifty charachter, and not to be trusted! That is why I have arranged for a third team to stay here, and protect the base. Last time we engaged him, Command sent everything we had to meet him. They feel for his trap, and as a result, Hunter HQ fell under attack. Of course, had it not been for Mega Man X, and Zero, we would not be here today. You will all receive notification as to your assignments within the hour. Until that time, you are all invited to remain in this auditorium for a short presenation. Provided in this presentation are mission protocols, and recently declassified information. Since these events involve all of you, I should think they would be of interest. Until that time...this meeting is ajourned." (to be continued)
