No, it was too late...he hadn't made it to the exit in time!
IO dashed franticly to a large door which was inches away from closing. Too bad! The elevators opened up, and reploid soldiers began to pour out into the sealed off submarine bay.
IO did a short range teleport, and landed right on top of the lip hanging over the elevator doors. They descended as tubes stuck into the wall, and curved outward at the bottom, leaving a tunnel shaped overhang to cover them. IO waited until five reploid soldiers, emblazened with Dr. Doppler's logo, ran past. He slid down the side of the tube, and jumped into the elevator. He started to franticly search the buttons to find any floor other than this...however, the strangest thing happened! The doors closed by themselves, and the elevator started to move. IO could see the elevator moved very quickly. He figured that there must be other troops up above waiting for the elevator. It didn't take the elevator a long time to reach the top floor. The control room was on this floor....what was left of it, anyway. IO did a short range teleport again. This time, he landed on the roof of the elevator, outside the car. The doors opened up to the lobby. More squads were waiting for the elevators to open. Troops loaded into the elevator, which was headed back down tot he sub bay. IO strained to listen. "What's all this about anyway?", One Reploid said. "How should I know? At least we'll finally see some action. I can't stand just waiting around!", another replied. "I hope we get to shoot something!", the first one said. Then, another voice told them, "Calm down, both of you! We have our orders, but we won't exceed them. We have report of an intruder down there. He's killed three so far. There's no answer from anyone down stairs." The two voices gasped in alarm. "Isn't that where Vile catptured X?", the second voice asked. "Yeah, but he's not there anymore. Vile took him to see the Doc!", The third voice answered. The three of them laughed, and the elevator began to move down. IO didn't want to go back down. so he jumped off the roof of the elevator, and grabbed on to the walls. "Taken to the Doc? Doctor Doppler has X? So that's where he is! Vile must have defeated him...or did he?"
IO slid down the walls until he came to the elevator doors. He grabbed a loop of cable, and hung over them. He charged energy into his weapon gauntlets. "This will take care of those fools down below!" He leapt into the air for a moment, and charged energy in his gauntlets for half a second. He hover jets kicked in, and he floated in the air. His hands arced with energy, and he let it go! "Machine Blast!". he yelled. A level two attack! A large, burning energy sphere sunk into the elevator shaft, illuminating it's path in a sickly glow. IO smirked with satisfaction as he watched the elevator car explode, and plummet to the bottom. When the doors opened, the explosion would create alot of havok below. He didn't want to destroy them at first, but he knew his life was on the line, and he couldn't stay hidden for long.
Satisfied that all was well, he pryed open the elevator doors. He did a quick scan. The lobby seemed empty. He floated forward, and dropped a few inches out of the air onto the floor. He walked forward, looking at something in front of him. The lights were dim up here, and it looked like a figure up ahead in the darkness. IO stopped in his tracks. "Who are you?", The figure asked. Io froze. He didn't know who this was, but he could feel a horrible power coming from the figure. It was strong, and what is more...it was unafraid! IO said nothing. He stood there, trying to make out the figure in the dim light. "I said, who are you?", the voice asked again. "Why do you hide from me?", Io finally asked. "Show me your face." The figured paused for a moment. "You are in no position to make demands.",it told him. "Show yourself! Show me your face!", IO ordered. The image in front of him flickered, and then seemed to grow! It grew into a terrible shadow, and filled the room. It choked out all of the light in the room. "I am the very essence of your fears.", The figure told him. IO laughed. "Just a trick of the light! Well, I have one of my own!" IO reached for his steel saber. His gauntlets shimmered, and energy flowed into his steel saber. "Plasma Cutter!", he shouted, and leapt at the figure. He moved fast, as if he weren't there!
The energy charged blade sliched through the air, and connected with something metal. There was a howl of pain, and IO could feel something warm hit his face. IO slumped over, and could hear the sound of another body dropping onto the floor. He tried to move, but he felt numb all over. He barely managed to roll over onto his back. He couldn't access his defense system! He tried to access it through his primary linkage, but to no avail. He tried to use a back up sub-routine, but that didn't work either! His vision dimmed, and for a moment, he saw the air shimmer, and crackle before he blacked out. (to be continued)
