Umm. . okay, this is a deep subject and can't really be explained in depth in a few sentences, but I will do my best to give a quick overview. If you want to contact me at: tapw63@yahoo.com, I can give you some links to Catholics sites that explain it in more detail but here goes:
The Catholic teaching is: sexual intercouse is designed by God to be between husband and wife *ONLY* and should never be *DELIBERATELY* made into an act which would impede the transmission of new life. Sexual intercourse is meant to have a twofold purpose: to create new life, if God so ordains it at that time, and to increase the closeness and love between the husband and wife. There is meant to be a link between the pleasure a married couple feels when making love and the creation of a baby. So. . .sex using contraception undertaken purely for its physical pleasure is prohibited, but so is high tech babymaking (in vitro, test tube, etc.) in which baby making is done by some means other than a husband and wife making love with each other.
Does this mean a couple can't have sex even if one of them *thinks* they are barren (as Scully did) or even after the woman has reached menopause?? No!! The couple doesn't have to expect every act of intercourse to lead to conception of a child, just be willing to accept the child if it conception does occur.
In practical terms, most devout Catholics use Natural Family Planning when/if they reach a point where they feel more children would be detrimental to the health of the family. Although NFP has a bad rap for some reason, my husband and I have found it to be highly effective. Even if the Catholic church changed its stand on contraceptives tomorrow, I can't imagine changing our form of family planning.
Um. . .Scully didn't exactly follow Catholic teaching in this area. Having never been in a position of thinking I was barren and being desperate to have a child, I'm not trying to judge her, just pointing that out. While most non-Catholics would probably assume that it would have been more "sinful" for her to have conceived William by having sexual intercourse with Mulder, the actual teaching of the Catholic Church would be that it would have actually been just as bad, or maybe worse, to attempt to conceive a child with her unmarried "partner" through in vitro fertilization.
