Subject: Partners (vague season nine spoilers)

Mulder and Scully's partnership was pretty steady. They were together (for once I mean this in a professional, rather than romantic, sense) for a full seven years; or a little less if you discount the couple of months they spent apart in season two. Mulder was with the bureau for about 15 years and only had, apparently, three partners during that time: Jerry whathisname, Scully and, very briefly, Krycek. (Contrary to what a lot of confused fanfic writers seem to think, Fowl Thing was never his partner. She was Jeff Spender's partner for a while, but never Mulder's.)
Scully herself has only had two partners during the entire time she worked for the FBI: Mulder for seven years and Doggett for one. Of course, she also spent several years working for the bureau in a teaching/analyst capacity where she didn't have a partner.
In contrast, Doggett seems to have blown through partners pretty quickly. Presumably he had one prior to Scully, then Scully, then Reyes, all within about a three year period. (That's right, isn't it? I didn't watch season nine except for the series finale, but from what I gathered Scully and Doggy were partners in season eight but, in season nine, Reyes was his partner and Scully just worked in the labs and provided them with guidance and technical assistance, while mooning over Mulder and raising William.) This is more in keeping with other cop shows, like "NYPD Blue", where Sipowitz (sp??) gets a new partner every couple of years.
I'm wondering which is more realistic?? Do most law enforcement officers change partners every year or two or do most form a partnership and stay with it for five years or longer?? Anybody have any idea?
