Many people, even those who think Robert Patrick is a fine actor, point out that the whole show was built around the Mulder family's generation-spanning ties to a consortium/alien conspiracy and that to do the show without him simply won't make much sense.
They should have followed the old showbiz adage "Always leave them wanting more". If they'd ended the series with "Requiem", there would have been fans lined up around the block to watch the second XF movie. . .and they would have gone out near the top of the ratings. Instead they, are apparently just going to keep it on the air until the fans lose all interest in it.
