If this is true, it will be wonderful!! This is what I had always hoped would happen (and, indeed, what CC had promised the fans he would do). . .allow DD and GA to leave the XF TV show, but continue to have Mulder and Scully live on in a series of XF movies. And I agree that to appeal to the prime movie-going audience, which is mostly teenagers, all future XF movies will have to be stand-alone MOTW-type vehicles, rather than part of the elaborate mytharc. (Kids who will be teens by Christmas of 2003 weren't even in kindergarten yet when XF debuted in September of 1993, so they're unlikely to longtime fans of the show.)
I see X-Files movies more as "summer blockbuster" type films rather than Christmassy-fare, though. Why do they have to wait until "late" 2002 to begin filming? Why not film during the summer/early fall of 2002 and release it in June of 2003??
All in all, I don't mean to be unduly pessimistic, but I'm not exactly holding my breath that this will pan out. This is the same Chris Carter who told he was going to end the show and begin filming a second movie after season seven, remember??
