I think the original success of "The X-Files" was due to a combination of factors - the incredible chemistry between David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, the terrific writing and the fact that, when it debuted, it was very different from much else on TV - among other things. Now there are a lot of TV series with sort of the same edginess that XF used to own. While some shows stay strong until the series finale (an option XF could have achieved if it had wrapped things up with "Requiem" or even "Existance") very few shows that droop in the ratings after the sixth season or so have ever "bounced back" and regained their status as top 30 hits. But, as you say, we'll have to wait and see.
